OK - I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but I seem to have made headway …

I rang Apple again today and spoke to two guys who seem to have unlocked the problem I’ve been having. Caveat: I upgraded to Windows 10 for free - plus I have the latest iTunes installed.

The Apple tech guy advised me to go to Edit then Preferences. A box popped up which showed that syncing with the cloud wasn’t ticked. This certainly wasn’t something I’d done - I can only assume that it somehow happened automatically. I ticked it again and suddenly my iCloud returned.

This seems to have fixed the issue I was having BUT [1] iTunes on my PC spent ages syncing with iCloud and in doing so randomly generated loads of duplicate tracks; [2] these then filled up my phone - it somehow changed the automatic downloads switch, which I know I set to ‘off’ … so I’m having to weed through the music on my phone, removing the downloaded tracks which should never have gone on there.

BUT (again!) I appear to be free of the problem … fingers crossed?!?!?

Hi turingtest2!

First of all, I'd really like to take a moment and thank you for all the help you've been over the years - I've read many of your support articles and guides, and you've really been a life-saver on more than one occasion. Thank you so much!

I'm having this same issue, and the steps you outlined above didn't help, I'm afraid. I even uninstalled iTunes and did a fresh install per your guide. Does it help at all to know that when this error message occurs as soon as I try to turn on the iCloud Music Library? It also happens as soon as I log in to iTunes when I've tried to log out and back in.

Another strange side effect, for me, is that iTunes switches to the "store" tab as soon as I launch it, instead of staying on the "library" tab as it has done for many years. I'm using iTunes 12.6.5.3 on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine.

Is there any chance that additional info makes you think of any other possible solutions? Either way, I really can't thank you enough for sharing all of your expertise with us all.

Me Also.. For me the problem happened around 05:00 on the morning of the 14 February, I was in the process of updating a Apple Music playlist on I-Tunes when suddenly the Genius Results error popped up! Again like you all its impossible to keep the ICloud checkbox ticked. Again I-phone ICloud updates working as normal. Im using Windows 8, My sister who has her I-Tunes on Windows 10 has no issues at all. (We both share the same Apple Music Subscription) its frustrating for me as many of my playlists contain Apple music which has dissapeared from I-Tunes due to this problem.

So I’ve visited my local Apple Store this morning and spoken to a guy that seemed to be clued up, they have a active iTunes working in the store on Windows 10, and I explained the situation regarding the iCloud not connecting and the genius message for over 2 weeks. He said that he himself was aware of the situation and asked if by any chance before this all happening had I downloaded and updated the latest IOS for iPhone via my computer. In fact only a few moments before I got the genius error message my iPhone SE had finished updating the latest update which was downloaded from ITunes, but the guy wasn’t certain this could be the issue. His recommendations were:

update to Windows 10 or purchase a whole new system if the laptop is more than 5 years old. Surely there must be a Fix for this available. Does anyone else have any updates

It is a major issue on operating systems below windows 10 so the fix from apple Im sure will not be in the short term. It’s not just the genius/iCloud error, there’s a few issues that’s causing I-tunes to run slower than usual on the older windows systems. But I’m optimistic as a previous post said that the genius/iCloud issue is causing financial factors for Apple so hopefully the issues are rectified quickly for us all

When you updated to Windows 10 did you also update the version of ITunes to Windows 10 version? If you still running the problem version of ITunes you used on the earlier version than apparently the problem will transfer over unless ITunes is also updated.

I'm getting frustrated with the situation now as I don't see why we should upgrade to a new Windows version all for the this problem.

I’ve just spent ages trying to figure out what exactly the problem is. I think the fundamental issue is iTunes no longer syncing with the iCloud - so it doesn’t make any difference if the CD you rip appears in your iTunes library on your PC - it will never transfer to your iPod (or whatever) without an iCloud connection. And that’s just disappeared. So this is totally something Apple needs to fix … :-|

The date does line up-ish with the disabling of IE 11, although that's for Win 10.

I don't have any issues navigating to the store through iTunes. I've tried the new library trick, didn't work for the laptop. New library is actually how I checked it out on my desktop since I didn't want to chance messing up the main library. Safe mode had no luck either.

I can run Genius from non-Apple music songs that are on my hard drive with no problem.

Same error and around the same time frame as well. Older windows machine with iTunes install synced to Apple Music on iPhone. Worked perfectly up until last week. For years I've been able to add mp3s not available in Apple Music into my desktop iTunes then sync them to my iPhone instantly. Then add songs to my Apple Music Library and it would sync to my desktop iTunes in almost the same time.

I listen to music every day and enjoy the massive Apple Music library (paid subscription btw) but still appreciate those random, rare songs that I own and aren't available elsewhere. Having the freedom of both makes music listening enjoyable, especially when you hit shuffle.

Please help!

Okay I am glad I am not the only one! I've been having this problem for over a week now, when I try to access my icloud library I get this message, yet if I just update genius it works fine, so it must be an iCloud issue. I was starting to give up and couldn't find anything about this particular error until just now. Strangly I can still access my iCloud library on my iPhone, just not on my computer. I've tried every. single. thing. that people have recommended, signing out and signing back in, turning off icloud and turning it back on, creating a new iTunes library, it doesn't work, because when I try to turn it back on that is the problem, I can't even get it back on. In my main library I can still see all my music in iCloud, I just can't download or play it.

I want to also note that this first happened to me on Tuesday night, but then I was able to restart my computer and for the rest of the night everything worked fine. Then on Wednesday when I opened iTunes I came across the same problem again so I tried to restart and shut down my computer, multiple times, only this time I couldn't get it to work like I did yesterday.
