  1. Turn off iCloud Music Library.
  2. Turn off Genius.
  3. Close iTunes.
  4. Delete iTunes Library Genius.itdb from your iTunes folder, if found.
  5. Open iTunes.
  6. Turn on iCloud Music Library (which also turns on Genius).

I’ve just spent ages trying to figure out what exactly the problem is. I think the fundamental issue is iTunes no longer syncing with the iCloud - so it doesn’t make any difference if the CD you rip appears in your iTunes library on your PC - it will never transfer to your iPod (or whatever) without an iCloud connection. And that’s just disappeared. So this is totally something Apple needs to fix … :-|

Its going to be a long drawn out issue i'm led to believe (unless of course we upgrade to Windows 10 or above)

Apple is fully aware of the issues which has been happening since February but its not high of their priority list apparently. So unless all of us that are having issues (any they must be thousands) bombard Apple support it wont get resolved as easily as we had hoped.

Updating to Windows 10 doesn’t work, even with the latest version of iTunes. I still have no contact with iCloud - the cloud symbol has totally vanished from my iTunes library and while I can rip tracks to iTunes on my computer, they won’t cross over to my other Apple devices. Something fundamental has gone wrong. I’m gonna try chasing them tomorrow and can but hope I get someone who will listen to me …

OK - I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but I seem to have made headway …

I rang Apple again today and spoke to two guys who seem to have unlocked the problem I’ve been having. Caveat: I upgraded to Windows 10 for free - plus I have the latest iTunes installed.

The Apple tech guy advised me to go to Edit then Preferences. A box popped up which showed that syncing with the cloud wasn’t ticked. This certainly wasn’t something I’d done - I can only assume that it somehow happened automatically. I ticked it again and suddenly my iCloud returned.

This seems to have fixed the issue I was having BUT [1] iTunes on my PC spent ages syncing with iCloud and in doing so randomly generated loads of duplicate tracks; [2] these then filled up my phone - it somehow changed the automatic downloads switch, which I know I set to ‘off’ … so I’m having to weed through the music on my phone, removing the downloaded tracks which should never have gone on there.

BUT (again!) I appear to be free of the problem … fingers crossed?!?!?

I’m trying to update my iCloud music library so that I can access all my songs from all my devices. When I click on iTunes and preferences and click on iCloud music library, I get a message saying genius results can’t be updated right now. An unknown error occurred. I’ve been trying this for a few weeks and I keep getting the same message. Thanks.

I have had this exact problem for the last year and have come to the conclusion that the old PC I have been using to ad CD’s to iTunes Match is now just too old to work.

I have bought an Apple USB SuperDrive and I am trying to figure out what Apple laptop I should buy buy to enable me to add CD’s again?

I could do with some advice, if I wanted to buy an old Apple laptop on eBay to use with my new Apple USB SuperDrive, just to add CD’s to iTunes Match, which model laptop would make the most sense both economically and in terms of functionality?

I’d like for this system to be relatively future proofed but can’t really afford a new MacBook just to add old CD’s to iTunes Match.

It's somewhat distressing that here 8 months after what looks like the most recent post, I'm experiencing the same exact issue. I very recently subscribed to Apple Music and subsequently tried to sync my iTunes library to iCloud. It's giving the same unhelpful Genius error listed above. I have tried all the solutions given in here, and none work. I'm running the last 12.10 version of iTunes available for Windows 7 on my old desktop. It has thousands of songs ripped from years of buying CDs on it, and not much else. I have other iOS and MacOS devices but nothing suitable to hold 40 GB of music just for iCloud.

If you are still running itunes 12.6 you are hosed. Interesting to see that what happened to me on my old Mac happened to the old windows users about the same time. Same error message. We have been left behind. I have been to the senior level of apple support and they without explicitly saying so which they apparently never do is that iTunes 12.6 is no longer supported / working with the cloud. Or in other words, honey it’s me, not you. The connection we had is no longer there for us. I have moved on. But if you upgrade your system all will be good with us again…

If you are running iTunes 12.6 you are hosed. Same error message on my old Mac, at about the same date. We have been left behind. Been to the senior level of Apple support and they confirmed without exactly saying so which they apparently rarely do that it is no longer supported. Update your geezer system and life will be good again, but it’s not going to work no matter what you try. The problem is not you, it is on their end.
