Email alias only works with @icloud, not @me

So I've had an icloud account since it was a .me account and I prefer the .me to the .icloud (or even .mac). The problem is I wanted to set up a new alias (used to be 5 aliases but now is only 3 and I have used up 2 of them already.)

First, there are two places these seem to live. One has this URL: https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage/section/information

The other is in: https://www.icloud.com/mail/ but you must click on the preferences gear, then the Accounts tab on the left.

AND there's a difference. In the first one, I have 4 email addresses. 3 of the are just my login name with different domains: @me.com @mac.com and @icloud.com PLUS one other that I want to work but isn't: <<-- Mail gets bounced and does not work.

So I tried to set up a new alias: Through icloud mail this time (still in the browser) I made a new alias, but it only shows as ***

So, can anyone explain what's going on here and if it's possible to get the @me.com?

I'd really prefer to have the @me.com.

Any suggestions?
