Can't update to Ventura

Hey,

I can't update my Mac to macOS Ventura.

It either says that my Mac is up to date (Monterey 12.4) or after clicking "Advanced" -> "Ok" it reloads and says "Unable to check for updates. Make sure you are connected to the internet".

When I run `softwareupdate -l` it logs:

```
Software Update Tool
Finding available software
The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1012.)
```

And since code -1012 is kCFURLErrorUserCancelledAuthentication I'm not sure what I could do to fix that. I'm not cancelling anything.

This problem persist in the Safe Mode as well. Changing networks don't do anything.

I have M1 Max chip if it matters.

I'd greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Thank you all for help and engagement.

I've managed to get my update to Ventura.

I'm not 100% sure what's the fix but if anyone finds this post, here's probably what you want to do if you have error code like me `NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1012` by running `softwareupdate -l` in terminal:

  1. Restart your Mac
  2. Boot your Mac into Safe Mode
  3. Run `softwareupdate -l` in terminal to see if the error still persists
  4. If it still persists, run `softwareupdate --list-full-installers` in terminal and get your URL in `NSErrorFailingURLStringKey`, in my case it was https://swscan.apple.com
  5. Go to https://swscan.apple.com using Safari (Chrome and Arc display 404)
  6. Click lock icon in the address bar, click "Show certificate" and select your domain. Again in my case it was swscan.apple.com
  7. Copy selected domain's certificate by moving the big certificate icon over to desktop. In my case it was swdist.apple.com.cer file
  8. Open Keychain Access app
  9. Select "System" keychain from the left sidebar
  10. Double click on your certificate file from previous steps (swdist.apple.com.cer)
  11. Now kinda wait a little, restart your Mac, etc.
  12. After some time you should be able to see the update. In my case it was after I returned from my long lunch break, something like 2-3 hours.

That information above is most interesting.

1 - ISP Issue that only the user can explore directly with their ISP

2 - Shutdown Access Point / Router then computer.

3 - Restart Access Point / Router

4 - Startup computer and try again

5 - Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprise the Operating System

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale. What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

A - Disk Cleaner

This will include CleanMyMac , aka “ BrickMyMac “

MacKeeper,

Dr Cleaner Pro Plus

Open Cleaner one Pro

Macmechanic

B  - Third Party Security Software

This will include BitDefender

This will included Norton Antivirus

 Sophos Av Software

Intego AntiVirus

 McAfee

Avast AntiVirus

Ad Guard,

 Webroot ,

 ESET ,

 Avira ,

AVG AntiVirus

 avira antivirus

Trustee

AntiVirus for Mac

F-Secure

Securemac

Cylance

Read some of the posting and arrive at your own conclusions.

Is the User using a " Third Party Security Software " on this computer ?

Software on the computer interfering with the download process including AntiVirus Software

Notation: Disabling the AV Software may or may not solve the issue. Removal of the AV Software may increase the chances of the download to perform as expected.

5 - Running behind a VPN which may increase Packet losses or corruption of the download

After these logs the command seems to hang for some reason. Inputting CTRL + c (^C) exits it.

Hey Old Toad,

as per description

This problem persist in the Safe Mode as well.

I've tried it again today and still looks the same. Restarting, shutting down, going into Safe Mode doesn't do anything.

Error code from running `softwareupdate -l` is the same in safe and normal mode.

If I try to install Ventura manually from the App Store, it says "Update not found. The requested version of macOS is not available. Please check if your Mac is compatible with this software.". Given that I have 2021 MacBook Pro, it should work.

You wrote "System settings" instead of "System preferences", because of that I can assume you already have Ventura installed. This specific OS UI difference doesn't matter. This issue is about not being able to update to Ventura from Monterey.

FYI IP address and router address are in your local network so it's not unsafe to share it publicly.
