HomePod 1st Gen and HomePod Mini - Configuring for Hours & Stuck

I had some issues after apple launched the new HomeKit platform and pushed out the update of 16.3.2 and I got the wild hair to reset them in the hopes that would make them work better. Well it didn’t it destroyed my entire home automation. I took all five of my devices back to the Apple Store since I have apple care on them. The hardware was all replaced and at this point I don’t think it’s hardware related. After searching it appears this is another known issue that apple is just making us all suffer and try random troubleshooting tasks until we are worn out.

I’ve deleted my home, made a test home, tried multiple router systems because some posts say it’s a mesh router issue, tried hotspots, removed every device from my Apple ID and setup each device again, changed my Apple ID password, used a friends iPhone to get the second 1st Gen HomePod updated that was the second replacement unit since I have two HomePods in my living room. I got one connected then when I changed my iCloud password again I kept getting an error saying the password was wrong and that I needed to update it. I have an IT degree and have been an apple user for years but this sucks.

I’ve had to add 23 Philips hue bulbs back to my home and thank goodness the hub from Philips hue pushes them over with their generic name and then have to regroup and rename the bulbs. Make up new rooms. I’ve spent at least 20 to 30 hours working on this already this week and I’m exhausted and sick of it. Please god will someone help me.

There’s a few things that haven’t helped the situation with the Apple ID switching around by using a friend’s phone and changing your password and using hotspots. Did you perform a hard reset by pressing the top method following this? Reset HomePod or HomePod mini - Apple Support Then set them up again with your iPhone after having made sure all of your Apple devices are now using the new Apple ID password and keychain turned on (all devices) See if you can get that sorted out first. Get them set up and worry about software updates later.

If you can at least have one set up into the Home App you will have a Hub to add accessories. Yes the Phipps bulbs can be set up in the Hue App and will self install over to Homekit. Go slowly with each one If stereo pairing, skip that step during set up and do it later. Remember to always ungroup pairs first before performing a reset. Make sure your iPhone is connected to your home wifi before setting up. Sometimes restarting your phone can help.

Moreover I suspect things went awry after a software update that might have installed the new architecture upgrade on some devices but not all due to the upgrade being paused. The upgrade will resume soon and possibly this will be your fix. I’m not sure this is the cause but might be. See: Upgrade to the new Home architecture - Apple Support

I get that it’s frustrating and you’re trying everything to fix it. Try not to change your Apple ID again so it’s well established on all devices first.

set up and configuration will go slow or stall if there are some things out of order, I.e; the Apple ID, dodgy wifi, etc.

I don’t know what the demented doll sounds like, I’m using the British male voice and he’s turned into Chucky! If I ask the temperature, he’s normal but if I ask about the volume or a request, he’s gone demented. It’s a very low, slowed down gutteral voice. I had to reset it today and following setup and pairing, one wouldn’t play. I spent two hours on this having to reconfigure my Sony TV. Apple TV, restarting everything, the whole works. It all seems fine now apart from the Siri voice and I really don’t feel like repeating this entire process. It just consumes too much of my time. This HomePod is the Gen 2. Mine is the opposite, if I press to ask it’s normal, if I use hey siri it’s the bad voice.

You can submit feedback re the Siri voice if you like: Feedback - HomePod - Apple

I’ve tried numerous things to fix mine but it’s gone worse. I might need to rinse and repeat. I think something went wrong during set up. It never asked if I wanted to use personal requests.

Good luck with yours!

Yes, I did everything you mentioned. When I reach out for help it’s a last resort. I’m a developer, beta tester, and have an IT degree and have over 20 years of infrastructure and software support and deployment.

I’m very meticulous when it comes to following directions for trouble shooting. When I search online there are 100’s of articles and support posts on this and I’ve tried at least ten. Today I’m having better luck and have the original new replacement first Gen HomePods up and running in a stereo pair connected to my living room tv and they are very responsive when given automation commands.

my network is sound, I have TP Link x20 and x60 wireless router setup with the x60 as the main connection to the internet modem router combo that is an Arris G36x and everything is up to date firmware wise on my network equipment and I have a business grade TP Link switch connected to the wireless router for expansion to wired connections on the second floor office and the Philips Hue Hub and the Sengled Hub both for smart bulbs.

I’m sick of the replacement minis in my bedroom one will connect and then when I get the second connected and then setup a stereo pair afterwards one will disconnect. I had one that refused to update it was on 16.0, the current version is 16.3.2.

I finally updated the one the would not update on my MacBook Pro and all devices are signed in with the current updated Apple ID and Apple ID password.

The one that I did the update on if you touch the top to activate it, Siri sound demented and possessed much like the new doll in the movie “M3GAN”.

This has just gotten really old and beyond frustrating. I have too much going on in life to spend hours fixing home automation.

Thank you for your suggestions and recommendations, if anything it reminded me to be patient.

I'm having the same issue with a pair of brand new HomePod 2s. Both were delivered with OS 16.0 installed.

Upon set-up, and after several resets, one of them eventually updated itself to 16.4 after about 24 hours of "configuring" and now appears to be working OK.

The second one gets to the "configuring" stage but has never come out of it. This one has a rather odd behavior in that it appears in the Home App as "configuring" on my MBPro and my iPhone, but on my iPad it shows up as "Not responding."

There appears to be some issue with multiple devices trying to contribute to the configuration process.

Given that this issue appears to affect all versions of the HomePod, I think it is likely that it is a software problem. It is a great pity that users do not have the ability to initiate or reject software updates on HomePods - and the HomePod 2 does not even have a USB port to allow connection via a computer!

I am still working with Apple Tech Support and will follow up if there is any progress.

I connected to my MacBook Pro and restored the HomePod mini with the current software from Apple. Also, I noticed that going into the home kit app sometimes closes the app, waiting a couple of minutes, then power my phone down entirely and leave it off for a few minutes so that way the memory ears and the connection to the network and homepods reset.
