Macbook showing "Not Charging" Symbol when plugged in and also when not plugged in

My MacBook charging unit has been misbehaving recently, though it's showing the "service recommended" icon.

When plugged in it shows the "not charging" symbol and recently, the symbol has refused to leave even when the mac is not plugged in. I've attached a screenshot for reference.

So essentially, my battery is refusing to charge
