Does Time Machine backup my apps as well as my data?
I understand that TM does regular (hourly, etc) backups. I didn't see where it would first take an image of the drive. Is that not a thing?

Time Machine will back up applications you've added, but in Big Sur and newer, not ones that are part of the system; in the event the OS needs to be reinstalled, they're restored with it. It also doesn't create an image of the drive.
