High Sierra Mail problems with Google

I have an aged mid 2010 macbook pro running High Sierra OS that can’t do email because of an incompatibility with google requirements. I have other macbook pros with later OSs on the same WiFi network. Could I use imap to transfer mail from of them to the troubled one avoiding Google entirely?

If by ‘sort this out’ you mean ‘fix’ … no. It’s a Google judgement thing that many models of mac computers (like my mid 2011) simply no longer offer acceptable security … they are shut off from retrieving or sending mail from a Google account, so one must use workarounds. It isn’t a ‘mac’ problem, it’s a Google problem. Sp instead of Apple’s Mail app, use a browser app instead … https://www.google.com/gmail/about/

… or buy a newer computer.

I was wondering if there's a way to get Gmail to work in the Mail app by adding a Gmail account to Mail, but instead of choosing "Google", choose "Other Mail Account" and then add the correct Host names. Incoming Mail Server IMAP and Outgowing SMPT.

I don't really know anything about this part of it but I hoped this might be a solution.

After trying all these suggestions, I think the answer is that OS 10.13.6 (Hi Sierra) is not supported by Gmail any longer. I even tried switching email clients, but the most common ones no longer support this OS. lastly, my aging MacBook Pro will not support a upgrade to a higher level OS. My work around is to use direct access to GMAIL when I am mobile and need my laptop or to use my IPAD which is a much newer device with a friendlier IOS operating system. I am sure that there are those of you out there that have more sophisticated solutions, but with no geek skills, that's what will work for me.

The App password does not get entered in Mail, but a browser.

Might need a more modern Browser than Safari on Mojave, or High Sierra like Firefox or Brave.

Yes, that should work...

Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…

If it's an IMAP account, delete it in Sys Prefs Internet Accounts then use "Other" instead of gMail choice to add it.

Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have gMail PW stored init to get the App PW.

It might just need an App Password separate from the gMail password…

I've seen this reply posted in many places, these same 4 links. I'm able to generate an App Password with Google. What I'm not able to do is put said password into my Google account in Mail. When I try to open my Gmail account in Mail, it pops up with the Authorization Error.

I feel like I'm close to resolving this. If I can just get High Sierra to allow me to enter the password I've been given. I haven't seen any posts on how to do that.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

I upgraded to Firefox 112, but I am not able to have the Mail app work for Google Mail yet. I requested an app password on my Google account for mail with the Firefox Browser, and I even stored the password in the Firefox Password storage. However, the mail app will not get past the error page. Am I to assume that the mail app on High Sierra will no longer work with Google, or am I missing a step?

I second that. Excellent guidance.

Just followed above guidance on adding my gmail to my High Sierra OS 10.13.6 on a mid 2010 MacBook.

after encountering the aforementioned gmail authorization error message I removed the said gmail account then added it again via the guidance on other using the @ email icon. The gmail generated app password in the password line as described above worked perfectly.

all help is much appreciated.
