My carrier (tracfone/verizon) supports VoLTE and wants me to enable it, but I cannot on my iPhone XS Max

I have an iPhone Xs Max with Tracfone. They are now part of Verizon and switching to Volte. I looked up how to activate it and got the instructions: "Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options or Settings > Mobile Data."

My options are Settings>Cellular Data (on/off toggle)/>Cellular Data Option (Data Roaming toggle/Low Data Mode toggle/Limit IP address Tracking toggle)/>Personal Hotspot >Allow Others to Join toggle/ Wifi Password (shows wifi password)

There are some other options as well, but none of them are "Mobile Data", nor are there options on any of the paths to find any options for "Voice and Data" or "LTE". It looks like my phone says "Cellular Data" where most online tutorials on how to activate VoLTE say it should say "Mobile Data".

Apple has the XS Max listed as being VoLTE capable.

Hello bear224,

Thanks for using Apple Communities.

The mobile data option will only be there if it is supported by your carrier and set up appropriately on your cellular plan. Since the option is not there at all, you will want to reach out to them so they can look into it on their end.

Kindest regards.

That can be a SIM issue, so I hope that solves it for you. When you lose signal try putting the phone in Airplane mode for 30 seconds.

If the phone has no network options then it is configured correctly for your carrier’s network; as Verizon has only two working networks - 4G/VoLTE and 5G/VoLTE - and your phone doesn’t support 5G, then there is no need for network option switches. Instead the only option (4G/VoLTE) is downloaded to your phone as a “carrier settings” file that overrides the previous network option switches. As Tracfone is a reseller (MVNO) they do not have their own network; they use their partner’s network (Verizon in your case).

Hi bear224,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're not seeing an option for VOLTE on your iPhone. This article has some information which may help: About the LTE options on your iPhone.

"The cellular-data options on your iPhone might vary based on your carrier's network.

If your carrier supports VoLTE

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and tap Enable LTE or Settings > Mobile Data and tap Enable LTE. If your carrier supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE), you'll see these options:

  • Off: Turns off LTE
  • Voice & Data: Allows voice calls and cellular-data use over LTE
  • Data Only: Allows cellular-data use, but not voice calls over LTE

If your carrier doesn't support VoLTE

If your carrier doesn't support VoLTE and is a GSM carrier, you'll see one of these options:

  • LTE or 4G: Allows cellular-data use over the LTE or 4G network when available.
  • 3G: Allows cellular-data use over the 3G network when available.
  • 2G: Allows cellular-data use over the 2G network when available.

Depending on the wireless carrier, 4G can indicate either a UMTS or LTE connection. If your carrier doesn't support VoLTE and is a CDMA carrier, you'll only see an option to Enable LTE. This allows cellular-data use over the LTE network when available.

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Thank you. I am unclear if Tracfone is on VoLTE only or not, as the website says “your existing phone will continue to work until November, 2023.” and “if you don’t get a new SIM card, your phone will stop being able to send and receive calls.”

My concerns are based on my phone recently losing connectivity for long periods (3-8 hours), in quasi-metropolitan areas where I typically have excellent signal.

In terms of the parameters you listed, my phone doesn’t have network options, and *sometimes* works.

I have a new SIM en route and am hoping it solves the issue.
