Unable to remove a contact from contact list

According to the instructions here: Create and change groups in Contacts on Mac – Apple Support (AU)

I should be able to do the following:

  1. In the Contacts app on your Mac, select the group in the sidebar.
  2. Select the contacts you want to remove from the group.
  3. Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  4. Click Remove from Group.

This simply does not work for me. I do (1) and (2) but when I press the delete key I just get a "boop" noise telling me that I have pressed a key that does not do anything.

Note: the contacts and groups are in iCloud. I wonder if this sharing somehow locks the group so I can't remove elements? Just a guess.

I have been unable to add or delete contacts from contact lists for many months now. This is a total nuisance as we have various clubs that we must mail to. Cost me extra time every day. I have called Apple many times, have several case numbers, but it still doesn't work. One advisor said she listed a ticket for it; I found out later it was just canceled. Please please fix this
