composing gmail on mail.app on ventura intermediary drafts being trashed

When I compose an email (using a gmail account) (or reply to another email) as I compose the email, drafts of what I've written appear in the Mail.app trash, repeatedly, replicating the email and adding the new words I've typed. Sometimes one email of a couple of paragraphs will generate dozens of emails in the trash. This has been going on for a while, while I was on Big Sur, and now that I've upgraded to Ventura. I had a friend with a gmail address try to replicate the problem (on Big Sur) and her gmail is NOT doing that. I've looked through the settings but I don't see anything that suggests that this might be a feature, and I don't know what else to try. Any one have ideas?

Hey karelle,

We’d be happy to help out. Sounds like your drafted emails are automatically going into Trash folder. If so, check to be certain that [Gmail] > Drafts is selected as your Drafts mailbox by going to Mail > Settings > Accounts > [Your Gmail Account] > Mailbox Behaviors.

We hope this helps out.

Hi karelle,

No worries! We're here to assist at your pace. You may need to log into your Gmail account in a web browser to adjust some settings. We found this helpful Gmail Help article with steps specific to Apple Mail.

Choose your IMAP email client settings for Gmail
We recommend the settings below if you use IMAP to read your Gmail messages in another email client, like Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird.

1. Open Apple Mail.
2. Click Mail > Preferences.
3. Click the AccountsJunk Mail, or Viewing menus.
4. Update the settings.

You might also go to Settings > Labels > System Labels > Drafts, and deselect "show in IMAP" while you're in your Gmail account settings. Other Apple Support Communities users have reported that this resolved the same issue for them.

If you're still unable to manage the Drafts > Trash issue with your Gmail account, you may need to reach out to Gmail Help for more advanced assistance. They'll be the experts when it comes to integrating their services with other email clients.

Best Regards.
