Notifications while listening to podcasts

Turn on message notifications while listening to podcasts?

When I'm listening to podcasts, my iPhone 12 doesn't play a sound to notify me of messages arriving. It does vibrate, but I don't always feel that if it's eg in a bag or pocket. Is there a way to say, yes, I really DO want to be interrupted with alerts? I can't find one either in Settings or by searching online. Thanks.

It is not on a focus, phone is up to date. Awareness is turned off. These were recommendations on another question of the subject that did not seem to be solved.
