Using sidecar with FCP and iPad

Has anyone successfully used FCP with sidecar and an iPad Pro? I have a MacBook Air M1 (2020, Monterey 12.6.3) and an iPad Pro (11 inch 3rd Gen, iPadOS 16.3.1). I'd like to be able to use the iPad as a display viewer but although I can set it up, it only works for a few seconds and always freezes - FCP continues to run normally on the MBA.

I've tried a wired connection but no difference. Is it simply that FCP is too much for Sidecar (other more basic apps seem to work ok)? At the moment I'm on a hotel network which is reasonably good but could that have something to do with it?

Any thoughts or alternatives appreciated!
