No way to play audio from Safari on external Audio Device

I tried to reset PRAM and SMC but didn't work.

There's no way Safari will reproduce audio on external audio device, only on the built-in speakers. With Chrome there's no problem with that.

I prefer to keep using Safari but this is really annoying. Any thoughts, please?

Is there any other option to reinstall Safari maybe, than reinstalling the OS?

Thanks everyone!

Hi princeofsueca,

Thanks for testing that. Safe mode does disable some audio devices when it starts up, so for the best information, we want to have you try another test. Try setting up a new administrator account on the Mac and then sign in there. The results will tell you if you have an issue that's system-wide or if it's user-specific. Here's how to Add a user or group on Mac.

"Add a user

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
  3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
    • Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
    • Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
    • Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to the computer or change settings. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change options in File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management settings. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.
  1. For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
  2. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
  3. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
  4. Click Create User."

Once you set up the new administrator account, sign in there and test, and let us know what you find.

Kind regards.

Hello princeofsueca,

If your external speakers are not working while playing audio in Safari, let's isolate this by starting your Mac in safe mode and testing. Safe mode is a good way to see if there might be some third party source causing this problem.

"Before you begin

To start up your Mac in safe mode, you need to know what type of Mac you have.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  2. Look at the information in the window to determine what type of Mac you have:
    • If you see an item labeled Chip, followed by the name of the chip, you have a Mac with Apple silicon.
    • If you see an item labeled Processor, followed by the name of an Intel processor, you have an Intel-based Mac.
  1. Use the corresponding set of instructions below to start up your Mac in safe mode.

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.
  4. On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Verify your Mac started up in safe mode

If you’re unsure whether your Mac started up in safe mode, you can use the System Information app to check the mode.

  1. On your Mac, press and hold the Option key, then choose Apple menu  > System Information.
  2. In the System Information app, select Software in the sidebar.
  3. In the System Software Overview, look at the value listed next to the item labeled Boot Mode.
    • Safe: The Mac is using safe mode.
    • Normal: The Mac is not using safe mode.

Thanks for the reply, princeofsueca.

If this is occuring system-wide, then it signals an issue with the software installed. The next step will be reinstalling macOS. This keeps your files and settings during the reinstall, but having a backup is always beneficial: How to back up your Mac - Official Apple Support

Continue with the steps to reinstall below:

Important: Your computer must be connected to the internet to reinstall macOS.

1. Start up your computer in macOS Recovery:
On a Mac with Apple silicon: Choose Apple menu  > Shut Down, press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears, select Options, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.
On an Intel-based Mac: Choose Apple menu  > Restart, then immediately press and hold one of these key combinations, depending on what you want to do:
Install the latest version of macOS compatible with your computer: Option-Command-R.
Reinstall your computer’s original version of macOS (including available updates): Option-Shift-Command-R.
Reinstall your current version of macOS: Command-R.
2. In the Recovery app window, select Reinstall for your macOS release, then click Continue.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions.
4. In the settings where you select a volume, select your current macOS volume (in most cases, it’s the only one available).

Reinstall macOS - Apple Support

You'll want to Contact Apple Support directly if the steps to reinstall do not correct the issue.

All the best.
