VueScan and Epson V600

In response to this thread (Epson scanner software constantly hanging… - Apple Community) I have a related follow up. Using MacBookPro (Monterey 12.6.3) I can scan photos (color and B&W) with my Epson WF-3620 (networked) scanner, using either EpsonScan 2 (V 6.4.100) or VueScan (V 9.7.99).

With my Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner and EpsonScan 2, some of the TIF files are corrupt and cannot be imported into Capture One Pro (Version 23) unless I first open the file in something like GraphicConverter and then resave it without any alterations other than resaving it.

With my Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner (but NOT with the WF-3620) I can preview (400 dpi setting) but not scan to TIF at any setting greater than 400 dpi. Any dpi setting higher than that results in VueScan hanging on the 'calibration' step or just quitting. If it hangs, the V600 blue activity light continues flashing as if it were trying to communicate with my laptop. At that point I have to turn the V600 off and quit (sometimes Force Quit) VueScan.

I have purchased a new short USB cable for the V600, tried all three USB ports on my laptop, rebooted my laptop, and re-installed the Epson software and VueScan. I am awaiting a follow up reply from Ed Hamrick at VueScan. After I initially reported this, his suggestyion was a shorter cable and to try a different USB port.

I'm not sure there is a solution to this because I suspect it is a software-based communication prblem between the V600 and VueScan. I'm posting partly in hope of a soltion, but mostly to document the problem for others.

VueScan Professional requires a functional Epson V600 driver that is compatible with the installed version of macOS. That is a pre-requisite to supporting the V600.

From VueScan:

Apple does not install a V600 driver by any means. VueScan may be referring to Apple's Image Capture application, but one would need to install the specific Epson V600 ICA driver for that software. Ensure that you have the current version of VueScan Professional (which it sounds as though you do).

The Epson v600 driver listing for macOS 12.x (Monterey) shows an ICA driver (for Image Capture) and a v600 driver and Epson Scan 2 Utility with all of these released one to two weeks before Monterey was officially released by Apple. That opens the door to being tested on beta Monterey code and may explain the poor results using these drivers with subsequent releases of Monterey.

I would try a different cable to eliminate the possibility of the cable being the problem. It's a simple and inexpensive diagnostic move.

Your MBP has combined TB4/USB4 ports. While there is backward compatibility with earlier versions of TB & USB, there are also subtle differences that may only show up when a cable that is "not quite up to par" for TB4/USB4 is used. I'm not suggesting your cable is bad, just that it would be worthwhile to see if another cable works or not.

I have a V550, which is the immediate predecessor to the V600 and the only differences between them are 1) the software bundled with each and 2) improved support for Digital ICE in the V600 (which is also a software difference). I have never had a problem using the V550 on any of my Macs (even on Monterey 12.6.3), although all my Macs are Intel. I don't have any Apple Silicon Macs at this point.

Yes, I have the current VueScan Professional version AND I downloaded and tried the versions that are recommended on the Epson site. It didn't help. But thanks, I appreciate the response. Since it appears to me to be a glitch when the V600 scanner and VueScan try to communicate, I am hoping the Ed Hamrick will be able to identify the problem in the log file. I cannot interprest the log file myself, but when I review it, it appears that successful processes include alternating read-write cycles, generally associated with two-digit pairs, and that the 'hang' even it associated with a read cyle of all zeros and then a write cycle prompt followed by nothing...
