Thank you for the reply.

But the phone is 3 years old, to the month, purchased new from a cell service provider. Date of release might be 6, or even older if we count what's in someones mind. And while I might expect it from Apple, "buy a new phone" isn't really a very good answer.

I want functional, I don't need latest or greatest. Except for Apples no longer allowing many app installs, which they have and previously supported, the phone works fine. But that's a fault of Apple, not the hardware.

No need to apologize; I am just interested in providing a definitive answer so that you can determine your options.

The iPhone 6 was discontinued in September 2016, excluding variants that were discontinued two years later. If yours is only capable of running iOS 12.5.7 that means it is not one of those later variants, and is at least six and a half years old now.

That information definitively confirms what Bob Timmons wrote.

The phone in fact is 3 years old, and not from being in a warehouse.

Buying a 2016 model BMW in 2019 does not make it a 2019 model BMW. It will always be a 2016 model BMW.

I understand the desire for frugality. If you want an iPhone that will run the latest iOS version an iPhone 8 meets that need. They are readily available on the used market for about $300 in a 64 GB configuration.

But... you must understand that it will become outdated very quickly, and then you're back to where you are now. There is a reason these things command the prices they do. The market decides. You are that market. So do you spend $300 a year, every year, or do you spend $1000 now for something better that will have an economic life of at least five years? Because the iPhone 8 was introduced six years ago, and it remains fully supported.

Which is the more frugal option?

I know what I'd do, but as Bob Timmons wrote... "your call."

Similar to you. I bought an iPhone 6 plus 128G for about $1200 a little earlier than September 2015 at Stanford Apple Store, which was the newest with highest specs at the purchase time, only got OS updates till iOS12 in 2019, and since then a lot of apps (require iOS 13 or above) and websites have not been supported by this phone. For instance, it could no longer open many websites (such as Smart&Final) via Safari although it could open some of them via Chrome or Opera. And it could no longer login to many websites (such as safeway.com) via any of these web browsers.

My 6 plus still has 40% of storage and I don’t want to buy a new phone before it’s broken or uses up its storage. I really don't need more fancy apps or latest features, but it's really frustrating that it could no longer do the most basic functions such as web-browsing and website login.

Since iPhone 6/6 plus is the best-selling iPhone of all time and has so many customers (about 222.4 million units of 6/6plus have been sold according to Wikipedia List of best-selling mobile phones), I hope Apple could offer some light-weighted iOS version updates to just cover the most basic functions such as web-browsing for older iPhones, which will cut wastes and benefit the environment too. Especially, the website login issue seems to be under the security category that Apple might be able to address by offering a latest security update.
