Called Apple Support. Added my Paypal account instead of another card. I did this on the web at appleid.apple.com and it accepted the Paypal payment method after a few Paypal-related steps.

Shortly afterward, the unpaid items that had failed on the original card began to clear.

The support rep, Sherry, let me know that the unpaid items might take up to 24 hours to clear using the new payment method. After they do, it may be possible to select my original card again. She said this had happened to her before as well, so she recommended keeping and not deleting the original card since it may become available to select again without re-entering it.

Re: Apple Pay: "my card expired and I cannot cancel or update it."

Apple has a support page to help you manage your cards and contact info:

If applicable: Try adding any new cards before removing old ones,

must always be one card on file, if you have active charges etc.

How to:

Change or remove the payment cards that you use with Apple Pay - Apple Support

If needed: To add a credit/ debit card to wallet for use with Apple Pay

See Apple support's article: set up Apple Pay.

Trouble-shooting:

What to do: If you can't add a card to Apple Wallet to use with Apple Pay

If needed:

Apple Pay Support:

Get support with Apple Pay:

Apple Pay - Official Apple Support

All the best :-)

brbo's solution doesn't work. I can't removed the failed card because a subscription is tied to the failed card. I can't edit the card but have to add a new one. I then can't add a new card either online or on the device. My first attempts to add a new card on the iPhone gave me an onscreen numeric keyboard that exceeded the iPhone (13) screen width so that key were missing and no ability to cut and paste.

Will contact support directly.
