The only option left is to restore my iPhone but I want the content on it. How can I retrieve photos etc from it

I have gotten my old iPhone 5 out to retrieve old photos. The phone is disabled and needs to be connected to iTunes. I have put it into recovery mode as discussed, however, the pop-up message states that content will be lost when recovering it, which is not what I want to do. How do I get around this?

You can't. The iPhone's owner is supposed to back their data up.
