Apple ID password not working to sign into App Store on Mac

When reinstalling Mavericks on an older Mac, I was not able to sign into the App Store app using my regular appleid and password. I would get a multi-factor authentication notification on my phone, then click "Allow", and it would give me a 6 digit code, but the login would fail on the Mac.

Here's the solution: The MFA popup does not seem to work on older Mac OS versions, so

  1. Sign into App Store (it will fail)
  2. Click "Allow" on your other device
  3. Note 6-digit Multi-factor Auth code from other device
  4. Type your password PLUS the 6 digit code, e.g."Password298321" into the password field in App Store app on your Mac.

You should be signed into the App Store app.

This method "probably" works for older iOS devices as well. Enjoy.
