iCloud

My phone has 84gbs of photos. iCloud claims I have 199gbs of photos. How is this possible &/or how do I manage this? My iCloud settings are for photos & notes solely.

iPhone XR, iOS 16

Location of Storage is the Difference:

These 84GBs of Photos a locally stored on your iPhone. This 199GBs of Photos are remotely stored on iCloud. There is a difference between iPhone storage and iCloud storage. So, if Photos is enabled on iCloud, then this 84GBs is also uploaded to iCloud. Learn More Here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? - Apple Support

"iCloud : I appreciate your reply! Unfortunately I still am not understanding. If my phone’s capacity is 128gb how can the iCloud be 200gb full? If I delete a photo from the phone it also deletes from iCloud. According to the iCloud there’s 114 invisible/mysterious gbs being used somehow."

iCloud is its own storage --things in there can be from other devices.

Troubleshooting iPhone Storage:

Try Removing Data from the iPhone itself...

Internal storage cannot be upgraded. It is what it is. So, the maximum internal storage capacity never increases, even if you upgraded your iCloud plan. Learn More here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? Apple Support

So, what to do...

"iCloud: Thanks, I understand that. It’s not the phone storage that’s confusing but the iCloud consuming more than the phone is even capable of storing. Could it be possible they’re duplicated via another device? Say prior to me shutting off photo sync w.an iPad mini?"

Atomically Uploading to iCloud:

Things are atomically uploading to iCloud. See what you have enabled in iCloud Settings. If something is enabled (in green), that that mean it is being added to iCloud as you create them. that seems to be the issue here:

On the iPhone:

  1. Click: Settings
  2. Tap: your Name (top item)
  3. Tap: iCloud
  4. View: the items
