Subtitle issues on TCL TV

We generally watch Apple TV through the App on our TCL Smart TV. We also use numerous other streaming apps. We've noticed an issue particular to the Apple TV app. During any given episode, around 5% of the subtitles won't work properly. They may be on time, or late, but they always just blink on and and off so fast they can't be read. Any work around or is this just a poorly made app? We've never seen this issue on any other service, so I don't really see it being a TV issue. It also happens regardless of whether the TV is using Wifi or ethernet.
