Auto brightness missing

I have a iPhone 12 with IOS 16.3.1 I am having an issue with my phone not being able to toggle brightness up or down. If I go to accessibility display text size Auto brightness is missing. The following picture is my accessibility —> text size showing the missing auto brightness as well I’m missing other stuff in this menu .

If I go to brightness setting in the setting it can not control the brightness. This problem can persist for days and doesn’t adjust so I don’t believe it has anything to do with the temperature setting either .

You can just ask siri to turn it on and off for you.

Ever since updating 16.5.1 my auto brightness no longer works and the toggle has disappeared in the settings. Also my screen no longer goes black automatically when on a call, I have to hit the side button to lock the screen so my face doesn’t push the screen buttons. This also started with the update to 16.5.1. Will there be any corrections for these issues?

Hi Jkevlin-,

It would be our pleasure to assist today.

You're in the right place for Auto-Brightness. It should be listed right under Reduce White Point at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. If you're not seeing it when you scroll all the way to the bottom, let's try a few basic troubleshooting steps to see if we can bring it back.

First, update your iPhone. Apple released iOS 16.4 today, and an update can help reindex or system files or resolve minor issues on your device.

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.
6. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

If Auto-Brightness is still missing after you update, check to see if you have Screen Time enabled with any content or privacy restrictions. Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch will help you with this step.

Thank you for being part of the Apple Support Communities.

Kindest Regards.

So the toggle was restored but it doesn’t do anything. I switch it on and off and the screen doesn’t dim or brighten or change at all. It’s like it’s just for show. It’s pretty frustrating to have to constantly adjust the brightness manually. And it’s like with every update I wonder what other functions you’re removing.

Today, I went to Studio A store, the clerk helped me to run diagnostic and found the ambient light sensor was broken. Finally, I found the root cause. By the way, my iphone is second-hand iphone X. If you have the same issue, which auto-brightness option is missing, I suggest you bring your iphone to service center for diagnostic.
