Here is what Apple recommends, if an iPhone gets wet:
… About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later - Apple Support
No “dry it in rice”. Rice usually has rice dust, and wet rice dust inside electronics is a mess as it solidifies.
It’ll either work when dried out, or it won’t. Either Face ID will start working again, or not. The standard warranty doesn’t cover water damage, though AppleCare+ (if you purchased that) might cover it, with a deductible.
The repair for the Face ID error here—if it doesn’t dry out and start working—will lijely be a replacement device.

Hello,
Apple has several documents helping you with Face ID.
This document is specific to seeing a 'disabled' Face ID alert, and explains what to do when you see that notice. --> If an alert says Face ID has been disabled on your iPhone or iPad Pro - Apple Support
If you don't see a 'disabled' message but do have general issues with Face ID not working properly, explore the list of things to try in this document: If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro - Apple Support
If the first 8 don't solve the issue then use #9, contact Apple.
