Issue opening files from Google Drive Finder window after installing macOS Ventura 13.3 update

I just downloaded and installed the macOS Ventura 13.3 update on my Mac Pro and after doing so, I can no longer open files that are stored in my Google Drive. Google Drive is downloaded to my Mac where I can open the folders/files from the Finder Window but when I click to open a PDF or Word doc (where the file is showing in the Finder window but is stored on Google Drive), the app itself opens (Adobe or Word) but not the document/file I clicked on to open. Before installing the update earlier this morning, I was able to open files with no issues. I tested it out and copied the files from the Google Drive finder window onto the desktop and then when trying to double-click to open those files, they opened with no issues...so I'm assuming it has something to do with Google Drive??

Just to let you know that I'm having the exact same issue.

It's pain in the butt since it makes installing Google Drive Desktop pointless. Plus it doesn't affect all my files or folders, some of them still open like before.

Haven't changed a thing on the Drive or on my Mac (macbook air m1) apart from 13.3 last night.

I guess it would be best to report that to Google but I haven't found where or how to file a bug report.

From the release notes (emphasis mine):

"Resolved Issues

Fixes a regression in macOS Ventura 13.3 where a security check causes bookmark resolution to fail when the path contains Unicode characters stored with composed normalization. As an example, this prevented files in Finder from opening when double-clicked. (107550080)"

I'm reluctant to install a beta, but at least it seems to be taken care of.

Hi,

I've had the same issue for some time now (double-click in Finder opens just the app, not the file), both on a M1 Mac Mini 2020 (Ventura 13.3.1) and a 2014 MBP 13" (Big Sur 11.7.6.), running Google Drive 73.0.4.0 (Silicon, Intel, respectively).

It does seem that it's files with Czech diacritics (š, č, ř, í, etc.) that are problematic. Removing (= renaming) those symbols make the files open normally.

Also it seems to have something to do with folders structure - e.g. all non-diacritics file in a certain folder (which happens to appear with the normal blue icon in Finder) open normally, but a non-diacritic file in another folder (which appears with plain list icon in Finder) doesn't.

No proposed solution has worked on either system so far, very very debilitating.

I am facing the same issue on Macbook Pro M1 - Ventura 13.3.1. I have folders syncing with Google Drive which have Spanish characters in their names like á, é, í, ó, ú. Can't open any files inside these folders. Files and folders without these characters open fine.

FIXED FOR ME: Remove special characters from names, then change them back, that specific file/folder will work again.

My friend confirmed it was fixed in the next update, 13.4 Vetura Mac OS. I hope to see it soon.

I can confirm that this trick worked for me. I had to do it on the files and on the folder names included in the path of files that use French diacritic characters. Maybe 13.4 solves the problem for all users, but this work around is good to know in the meantime. Note that the problem happen to me with mp3 files also. In and out of Google Drive.
