System update needs 16 GB. I have 103 GB free, but it is not enough!

Surely 103 GB free storage is enough for my Mac to update. My Bin is empty and I've got rid of many files. Advice would be welcome.

I have a MacBook Air early 2015. Monterey, version 12.6.3.

Agree 103 GB of Empty Space should be enough.

But this is not always what we expect to happen as in getting this Alert about Empty Space

You could try >>

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Does the issue present in this mode ?

1 - The upgrade is 16GB but you need way more than 16GB, something like 45GB

2 - "Available" should be but in fact is not the same as "free".

Select your drive in the Finder and press Command-I.

What does it say in the info window?

It may say something like, for example:

Available: 30GB (73 GB purgeable)

The problem is that the system is not all that quick release that purgeable stuff. This may be local Time Machine snapshots, or stuff that you deleted but the OS did not mark as free.

What is the output of the following command in Terminal?

tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

Ah, the Purgeable Space versus Empty Space could also be a source of this issue as previous Contributor has outlined

The two are different in that Purgeable Space is Managed by the Operations System

When the Operating System deems the Empty Space is needed it will release back to the Empty Space some of this to be reused and become Empty Space

AFAIK - there is no user method to hasten this transition from Purgeable to Empty Space

It can take a day or more before this happens

Hi. I must admit, after I had posted my question and left the laptop alone overnight; the next morning it updated without an issue. But I should have thought to do a safe mode as it seems to fix a great deal for the novice like me. Obviously something happened just by leaving it alone - but what I wonder. Anyway, I tried the terminal route as advised by Luis but my answer was (my name) and a (%) sign, no figure. But thank you anyway.

Hello, thank you for your interest. I have answered P Phillips with: I left my laptop alone overnight and the next day the update worked without an issue, without doing a safe mode even. I don't know why. I tried your terminal advice but the second time added the (/) and it did something. I got a list of timemachine backups with dates. But I don't know what that was for. Anyway now all is well, seemingly just by waiting. Thank you anyway.

System update needs 16 GB. I have 103 GB free, but it is not enough!
