Raw decode on DJI drone DNG files broken by macOS Ventura 13.3

The DJI DNG files did not appear "broken" before 13.3. I only see this issue using apple preview since I don't use any of the apple editors. These DNG files are not broken in Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, DXO, On1 Raw Photo.

This issue only appeared upon apple update 13.3. 13.3.1 and 13.3.1a

Since this issues doesn't seem to have been resolved til now, here's something y'all can do in the meantime if your application relies on the macOS's broken handling of this type of RAW files.

You can use the Adobe Digital Native Converter to convert your .dng files to an older format that doesn't seem to cause these issues. Just open the folder your .dng-Files are situated in and click on "Change Preferences".

The issue doesn't seem to happen if you select any compatibility option >= Camera RAW 4.6. Everything above will cause you issues. After that just convert the images and you'll be able to use it.

It comes at the caveat of a significantly increased file size - but that's all we have til Apple fixes this. I take this over not being able to handle RAW files in Pixelmator or any other apps that use Apple's RAW engine.

Hi everyone! I'm happy to report that the just released macOS Ventura 13.4 fixes this bug, DJI RAW images display correctly in Preview & Photos - I assume 16.5 will have fixed it for iOS as well.

Yes can confirm Ventura 13.4 has fixed the DNG issue. Currently on holidays and my DNGs look perfect.

Just to let you know, I have this same issue with DJI Air 2S. Which I only recently acquired. I have some slightly less banding in old Mini 2 DNG files. Am pleased to report that Adobe LRC shows them OK.

I thought, at first, it was a DJI problem with my refurbished (from DJI) Air 2S.

P.S. Nikon RAW are still OK.

What I have found, for what it's worth, is if you import the drone's DNG into LRC (in my case) and then immediately just export as original, it cleans up just fine. If there is any silver lining, it's I usually do run my photos thru LRC first. And right now I am doing raw+jpeg in my drone. So I have one to share and see how well it was taken.

But because there might be a work around, for some of us, doesn't mean Apple should not fix something that is obviously broken.

Affinity Photo has no problems importing the DNG files out of the Mini 3 Pro into the RAW-converter -and converts them properly into JPGs.

Yes, but the problem seems to be with Apple's 'Preview' software, which can no longer display DJI's .dng files correctly, and not with the files themselves, as these (fortunately) can be viewed correctly and worked with specific software (such as Photoshop, Lightroom etc.).

I hope that Apple will soon resolve this serious problem.

Updating to 13.4 fixed it for me, required me to open up previously imported photos and make a change in order to trigger the thumbnail to regenerate. It's possible that the thumbnails would eventually refresh on their own.

Been in touch with Apple support about this all week troubleshooting. I’ve had 3 different tech support consultants attempting to troubleshoot this issue and I keep proving it started happening from the latest update 13.3.1

I have previewed the same images on an old Apple Mac laptop (2013 model) and no issue at all. So apple is responsible for this, not DJI. I have proof that this works on an older model apple Mac using the exact same SD card and image.

We need a new update asap to fix this. I’ve paid a lot of money for this new MacBook Pro, two months in and Im already having problems.

So, currently where I’m at with this. Apple support has escalated this to the engineering team and I will hopefully have an update in a week. What that update is, I have no idea. I highly recommend every one get in touch with Apple and report this issue. It’s very poor performance for such an expensive product.

I walked into JB and inserted my SD card with these raw images into a cheap pc laptop and the images came up just fine, as they should.

I used LR->Library->ConvertPhotos to DNG fixed problem but this is extra step when I working with DJI mavic 3

now I can use my spacebar for preview without banding error

Mac OS 13.4 has been released. Let’s update to the latest software and see whether Apple has fixed it.

You can use any software that doesn't depend on macOS for raw decoding that reads DNG files like Lightroom, Photoshop. DXO, On 1 Photo Raw. Topaz, with no problem.

Since these are my workflow programs, I don't have any issues with DJI DNG files except for using Apple Preview to view them.
