Raw decode on DJI drone DNG files broken by macOS Ventura 13.3

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, without FCPX I can't do my editing with the usual workflow. I also don't use JPG files as you lose way too much information compared to a DNG. I guess until Apple gets it together, I'm going to have to learn Lightroom CC better. Just sucks to learn a whole new workflow!!

Been in touch with Apple support about this all week troubleshooting. I’ve had 3 different tech support consultants attempting to troubleshoot this issue and I keep proving it started happening from the latest update 13.3.1

I have previewed the same images on an old Apple Mac laptop (2013 model) and no issue at all. So apple is responsible for this, not DJI. I have proof that this works on an older model apple Mac using the exact same SD card and image.

We need a new update asap to fix this. I’ve paid a lot of money for this new MacBook Pro, two months in and Im already having problems.

So, currently where I’m at with this. Apple support has escalated this to the engineering team and I will hopefully have an update in a week. What that update is, I have no idea. I highly recommend every one get in touch with Apple and report this issue. It’s very poor performance for such an expensive product.

I walked into JB and inserted my SD card with these raw images into a cheap pc laptop and the images came up just fine, as they should.

I just spoke at length with a senior advisor at Apple. Astonishingly, he had never heard of dji... His response was that dji would be responsible for updating their firmware, not Apple. So, don't hold your breath.

I just can't believe that. pole sells the DJI Osmo on its website... and now, DJI also revealed that the Phantom 4 will be available exclusively at launch through Apple's retail stores and its own storefront, before expanding to other third-party resellers. 

Not trying to give Apple too much room here but it's possible the DJI files were "broken" before 13.3 but the prior macOS version were also broken and didn't manifest the issue. Lots of moving pieces but the fact that we have an escalated issue per above means at least Apple engineers will get eyes on the problem. Progress.

For what it's worth, no joy in ACDSee Photo Studio 9 (v9.292740) in the View mode though the thumbnail view for the same image seems to be OK. That's using the "RAW Decode" option in View. Switching it to "Embedded Preview" clears it up. That implies ACDSee is doing something different than the RAW decoder it's using (assuming Apple's).

The DJI DNG files did not appear "broken" before 13.3. I only see this issue using apple preview since I don't use any of the apple editors. These DNG files are not broken in Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, DXO, On1 Raw Photo.

This issue only appeared upon apple update 13.3. 13.3.1 and 13.3.1a

Don't shoot the messenger, please. The senior adviser I spoke with must have been recently promoted, especially since he hadn't heard of dji...

I have other avenues available to me that I've alerted to the issue and will appraise you of my findings as soon as possible.

You can use any software that doesn't depend on macOS for raw decoding that reads DNG files like Lightroom, Photoshop. DXO, On 1 Photo Raw. Topaz, with no problem.

Since these are my workflow programs, I don't have any issues with DJI DNG files except for using Apple Preview to view them.

I also have the same problem. Unable to use the "Previews" software to display .dng correctly.

You must necessarily switch to another software.

Really annoying problem, considering that .dng are professional formats used extensively by professionals.

Yes, but the problem seems to be with Apple's 'Preview' software, which can no longer display DJI's .dng files correctly, and not with the files themselves, as these (fortunately) can be viewed correctly and worked with specific software (such as Photoshop, Lightroom etc.).

I hope that Apple will soon resolve this serious problem.

Everyone running Ventura 13.3.1 has the same problem. Ventura 13.4 should be out next week and hopefully the issue will be fixed.

I think I found a way to fix it! It was happening for my DJI Mavic 3 Classic on my new iPad Pro with M1. I downloaded the free version of adobe Lightroom, opened the files, edited them there and then exported of them back into Photos, and they were back to normal!

I used LR->Library->ConvertPhotos to DNG fixed problem but this is extra step when I working with DJI mavic 3

now I can use my spacebar for preview without banding error

I thought it was yesterday when I went to the App Store to view the public version of 13.4. But time flies and gets fuzzy when you're having fun.

Dang, I hate this new forum layout. I keep missing the "Additional Replies" link and reply to what I see initially. It's a b***h losing your sight.

Updating to 13.4 fixed it for me, required me to open up previously imported photos and make a change in order to trigger the thumbnail to regenerate. It's possible that the thumbnails would eventually refresh on their own.
