Why new MacBook sometimes asks for a PIN instead of password to unlock Touch ID?

Sometimes when it comes out of sleep mode, my MacBook asks for PIN instead of password in order to login. Anyone know what that's about? If I turn it off and restart, it fixes the issue, but then it happens again a few days later.

I understand that on occasion, instead of the login screen with its usual blank password field you are encountering one showing PIN instead, apparently waiting for you to provide a code. Is that correct?

There have been reports of that happening if you use a YubiKey (a type of "smart card") or if you or any previous user of that Mac has ever used one with it at any time in the past.
