Apple TV 4k streaming video keeps starting and stopping

I've been having an issue lately where I start playing a video from a streaming service that will go for about 2 or 3 seconds and then the screen goes black. Nothing happens and then it will sometimes flash back on and then stop again. It doesn't appear to be paused because the screen doesn't show anything, but pressing play again will sometimes start it playing again. I have to keep pushing play over and over. Sometimes it works and other times I need to go back to the main ATV menu, and then try to start the video over again. Sometimes I have to restart the ATV to get it to work.

It seems like it was originally only happening with Amazon Prime, and I think that's still the worst offender, but now it's also happening with Netflix, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Acorn, and Britbox. However, I don't think I've ever seen it happen with YouTube, PBS streaming, or Reuters. My ATV 4K is just a little over a year old, as is my Sony Bravia TV. I've also tried 3 or 4 different HDMI cables. This is really getting old, so I'll be very grateful for any advice.

Hey there, ndelc,

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities. We want to help you get your Apple TV working at its best. It sounds like quite a few apps are experiencing the issue so we want to try seeing if you can disconnect your Apple TV from your network and then reconnect it afterwards. If you're connected via Ethernet, this would be as simple as disconnecting the cable from the back of your Apple TV. If you're using Wi-Fi, open up the Settings app and choose Network > Wi-Fi. From there, choose your Wi-Fi network and then choose "Forget Network".

After your Apple TV is disconnected, go ahead and reboot your modem and/or router to restart your network.

Once everything is booted back up, reconnect to your network and test out the Apple TV with a few different apps, checking to see if you are still experiencing the video playback issue you described.

We hope that this information is helpful.

Have a great day!

This may not be relevant to your particular situation, but I realized the other day when streaming, my system was hesitating every 3 or 4 seconds. I decided to offload the job of producing the sound to an external AVR.

After I did that, the video started playing smoothly. My TV is a recent Sony version, but it appears the TV does not have the performance capabilities to reproduce both high-quality video and high-quality audio.

Mine just started this behavior 2 weeks ago. Before that I never noticed it before. It will stop streaming TV shows. Nothing else plugged into my switch is doing this and I can see the port light on the Apple TV going off. Sometimes turning amber for 100 mbps. Then back to green (1 gbps). It’s definitely an issue with the Apple TV. I’ve rebooted everything several times and it still does this.

Apple ID accounts need to be activated for suitability for purchases (subscribing, renting, buying). Besides all the other user information, the Apple ID account needs to have a valid linked payment method to bring any optional future charges to. This payment method must be issued in the same country as what your Apple ID is set to.

To create your Apple ID on an Apple TV, Android device, smart TV, or streaming device, you can usually follow the steps provided onscreen and enter your full name, date of birth, an email address or phone number, and a payment method. If you set up the Apple TV app on your smart TV, you might be redirected to activate.apple.com to create your Apple ID. You can also use the steps below to create your Apple ID on the web.
