Both Microsoft Office 2008 and 2011 for Mac Home & Student Editions both work for me.

MS doesn't sell a version that is anymore, Office 365 may work in a Browser online.
Look into the Free LibreOffice, it handles MS Office files like Word & Excel, & Page Layout…
Kurt Lang Siad:
"Except Microsoft stopped selling both long ago, and since the activation servers for both have long since been shut down, there's no way to activate a copy of either if you install it."

Compatibility:
Avaticate-able or not, they are compatible.
Activate-able or not, they are compatible.
And totally useless since new installs cannot be activated. I was letting the OP know it would a waste of money to purchase either, if they could even find a copy.
The paid, free trial of SoftMaker's Office 2021 for Mac is supported on High Sierra to Ventura, as well as Windows and Linux. Might be worth a try on your existing MS Office documents. Probably more user friendly than the free LibreOffice Suite.
For future reference…

Chat with Microsoft, for Getting an Upgrade:
I chatted with Microsoft and they granted me a free upgrade to Microsoft Office for Mac Home & Business 2021 in exchange for the 2008 version keys that I had (and still have laying about). So, provide them with keys, when chatting.
So, if you have a newer macOS, perform a chat session with a Microsoft Rep, seeing if they’ll grant you the same. This is the link for performing the chat session: Microsoft Contact Us Virtual Agent - Microsoft Support
Important: Just don’t share your screen with the MS Rep, as they’ll have full access to your Hard Drive. They prompt many for that, and it’s quite risky business, indeed.
It would, if it could be activated. But that has also had its activation server shut down. Office 2016 is obsolete.
The only way 2016, 2011 or 2008 can be used is if they're on a Mac where they had previously already been activated before MS shut down those servers.
Thanks You very much BDAqua

You're welcome, good luck my friend.:)
Thank you very much.
Do you know if the Office 2016 works with the High Sierra?
Thanks
Thanks Kurt
