MACBOOK AIR - LOCKED OUT

After 5 yrs w/ my MacBook Air, bought thru and issued by our high school, I get a gray screen w/ Apple logo that requires a 6 digit passcode (numbers only). Never ever seen this before, and the lap top is locked down at this point, can't do a thing. Went to local Apple store, guy there has never seen this before, thought it might be malware? Any thoughts very welcome, thank you!

If that is the screen you are seeing, that means that this laptop is still associated with an Apple ID that is not yours and/or it is under MDM management by the high school you got it from. As such, you will need to contact them to get this removed. If that is not possible, or they are not willing to help you, then this laptop will be useless to you.
