How do I fix my message app on my iPhone?

My messages app started crashing about an hour ago, I can't send or receive messages. When I load the app it shows me a black screen. Every once in a while I will receive all of the messages sent to me in the past ten minutes or so but I can't read them on the app. I can't send messages through the pictures app either.

“Restoring” my iPhone to factory via iTunes on a computer (as suggested by multiple Senior Advisors that handled my ticket), was the only thing that fixed the issue for me.

The reason why Apple is telling you to try different troubleshooting methods, is because the solution to this issue is different for every user.

Some users were able to resolve this issue by toggling off and on iMessage in Settings, this method didn’t work for everyone.

Others were able to resolve it by signing out of their Apple ID on the impacted device and signing back in. AGAIN, this method doesn’t work for everyone, and the list goes on and on for different methods that have “worked” for people.

Apple is very aware of this issue and has yet to figure out what is causing the issue and why it’s impacting some users and not all users but in the meantime while they’re investigating, some of us like myself have worked thoroughly with Apple Support running tests and etc to help pinpoint the issue and find which troubleshooting methods worked more permanently.

The only workaround that has worked for me, was restoring my iPhone back to factory using iTunes on a computer.

Resetting your iPhone via Settings on the phone itself, is only resetting the phone using the same corrupted software, while restoring via iTunes, puts new software on the phone.

Restoring the phone to factory via iTunes, is a requirement from the engineers, in order to advance your ticket to the next level with Apple. If restoring via iTunes doesn’t work and the issue comes back, then your Senior Advisor would need to work further with the engineers and you, to find the root cause and a more permanent fix.

updating to 17.5.1 has caused the following issues: native messaging app freezes , doesn’t send txt or iMessages. I tried restarting my iPhone 15 problem continued. I deleted all messages, restarted my iPhone 15, no progress. Signal was confirmed at 5g . Storage capacity is within normal range. No other issues with any other apps. How long will it take the techs at Apple to patch the update? These are very expensive phones and the service prices are unreasonable. Maybe further testing needs to take place before updates are released .

I’ve been having this issue for four days while traveling in Europe. My message badge shows over 70 messages but when I click on the icon it freezes my phone and the screen goes black. If I got to settings, messages, my screen also freezes. My daughter can’t set up WhatsApp as an alternative because it needs to text you a code, but text doesn’t work. This has been going on for nearly a week with no end in sight.

Me and my family have the same problem since today.

we are using iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro

Almost all apple apps are troubling, and some more as well. I cannot open phone app, message app, contacts app anymore, I only got a white screen and then the app crashes. I cannot phone or message anymore. The Find my app has same issues, sometimes it freezes, sometime all my AirTags vanished, then appear again. Also apps like Amazon or Facebook messenger keeps freezing at start, my Apple Music is able to find music, but I can't play any song. I tried two restart methods, volume up/down, then power and slide the control to shut down. And keep holding the power button to force a restart. Nothing worked for me. My iPhone seems dead since 6 hours.

I got a MacBook Pro M3 Pro and an iPad Pro, and all these devices are running fine. My wife's iPad Air is also working. Only our 3 iPhones are dead.

Does messages/contacts/phone app use iCloud at startup? It seems that the phones have trouble with iCloud. But I can access my iCloud files. Also photo sync was not working for a while, at least this started again. I don't want to logoff from iCloud because I don't know if I will loose some data. Why this happens to my entire family?

Any ideas how to handle this? I'll wait for tomorrow and check if the issue still present.

After checking my iPhone for a lot of time, I found out some more glitches:

  • I cannot access some settings anymore: mobile settings, phone, message, FaceTime settings, accessibility settings.
  • phone and message apps are still dead: only a white screen when opening. when I swipe up to reveal the running apps, I can see the last message conversation, but when selecting, the white screen reappears
  • podcast and music app does not work most of the time, sometimes I'm able to play music, but most of the time, I select a title, it gets highlighted for a second but nothing happens. Today, suddenly the music began to play about 2 mins after selecting the title.
  • in contacts, I can see the contact list again, but immediately after selecting a contact, it freezes, no more scrolling and I have to kill the app
  • find my app most of the time does not load content (map, people, items and freezes -> have to kill the app.
  • home app does not updates the status of all my smart plugs and other devices
  • apple watch app show a pending update, but when I go to the update screen, it get stuck saying "checking for update...."
  • my mobile data and WIFI works fine, I can open safari pages, or chrome/opera, my mail boxes are updating, I can also update apps in the app store
  • After trying to reset my network settings, the phone got stuck in the update screen showing the apple logo and a short proggressbar for about 15mins until I tried a hard reset (plus/minus volume and holding power until it restarts)
