"Video not available"

This message came up while I was watching a show on a Samsung TV: "Video not available. There's a problem loading this video. If this continues, check your internet connection."

It's not the internet connection--I turned on a show on another streaming service to check. What else can I do?

Can you disclose the show, so that others can try the same?

Does it happen for multiple titles in the Apple TV app?

If it is not a content provider issue …

Something is causing the app to be unable to contact the remote servers.

See if this document has clues that apply to your situation: If you can't watch or stream movies and TV shows in the Apple TV app - Apple Support

“Video not available” may mean no valid reaction from the remote server.

  1. Verify that your router doesn’t block Apple’s servers (or its CDN) through a firewall setting.
  2. Verify that your router doesn’t block ports that Apple services like to use.
  3. Verify that you use a good DNS on your router, like the one from your ISP, which gets updated with all server names that Apple might use.
  4. Verify that your TV has the correct date and time and timezone, as Apple may be more strict about that (TLS) than other content providers.

Else

  1. Check for TV OS software updates.
  2. Check for Apple TV app updates, if not set to do so automatically.
  3. Try resetting the Apple TV app.
  4. Try deleting and re-installing the Apple TV app, if possible for your device.
  5. Try restarting the TV.

Else contact the Apple Support staff for assistance.

After researching this issue for over a week, I finally found a workaround that may help some. When I talked to the customer service rep, she said that because I could access AppleTV on all my Apple devices, she couldn't help me any further. I decided to see if I could download the AppleTV app on my laptop (not an Apple product). I typed in "tv.apple.com" on my search engine and the AppleTV website came up. I entered my password and I was able to access all of the programming.

My Samsung TV is supposed to be able to mirror an iPhone but it wasn't working. As a result, I just took an HDMI cord, plugged one end into the TV and the other end into my laptop and I was able to watch AppleTV on my big screen. Not as easy as simply gaining access to my third party options from my Smart TV but at least I won't have to watch AppleTV on my iPhone.

Hope this solution helps someone out there who may be experiencing the same problem.

Same problem. Initially the app worked fine, now I am getting this error. Tried all recommended steps, nothing worked. Can exclude internet as other streaming apps work fine.

I am running the aplletv app on a LG B6 series TV.

A workaround for me was to go to the appletv app settings and enable the option that forces lower resolution.

Sad that Apple does not seem interested in fixing the issue and just gives customers the usual "have you tried switching it off and on again" treatment.

So I just got this problem, on brand new Samsung Smart TV that ran Apple Tv+ for almost 2 months ans started then ”video unavailable” error. Naturally wifi reboot, reinstalling app, nothing worked. Trailers play without problems but nothing else, not even shows I already watched. Worse, air play from iPhone also refused to play it on tv.

Anyway. What fixed it. Someone mentioned ”Samsung Smart Hub”. Turn it off guys, and ”keep last app running” also off. I got my Apple Tv stresm back. Hope it helps.

I tried the HDMI cec setting to off. That didn't work. Also tried something else someone mentioned with no luck. Someone else mentioned having to update payment options. From quite a while back I was using a credit card that expired. They actually sent me an email to update it after I set up an appointment for a support call back today. So I tried that and now it works!!!!

I was on the phone with Amazon support yesterday for two hours. I have several fireTVsticks and was experiencing the problem on some but not others. I swapped them around and found the problem followed the device. Further investigation disclosed that all devices with the problem were on software version 6.2.9.8/4759. All working devices were on 6.2.9.8/4758. Got hold of Amazon tech support and after an hour and a half and 3 agents, it was discovered to be a known problem they were about to release a fix for. Sure enough, 6.2.9.8/4760 was out this morning. I installed the update on all dysfunctional devices and the problem is no more.

Tried everything – restarting, reinstalling, unplugging cables, you name it, but no luck.

Then I stumbled upon this article that suggested turning off HDMI CEC. And guess what? It worked perfectly for me! If you're stuck, give this a look: https://pointerclicker.com/apple-tv-not-working-on-firestick/.

The guide has really clear demo images, super helpful. And if that doesn't do the trick, they've got like 10 other solutions you can try out.

So I figured it out. I have Xfinity and it does a daily update every morning but the past several weeks I always opted out because why must you update and restart every day. Anyway the one morning it popped up so I allowed the Xfinity update. Once I did that lightbulb 💡 went on so I went to apple tv app and Boom videos are playing fine. Not sure if it will help anyone else but thought I’d share. So if you have xfinity you must allow the update ,that pops up on it’s on.

I had the same issue on my Sony Bravia TV, however in my case Apple TV app couldn't load any movie. It appeared to be somehow related to parental control turned on my TV:

  • if PIN set was set for Apple TV app, it couldn't play any movie in the app.
  • if PIN was not set for Apple TV (no parental control on Apple TV app on the TV) it was playing each and every movie without any problems.

I discovered my pattern accidentally, after being forced to factory reset of the TV - I decided to leave it without PIN for some time and... just learned that Apple TV app started to play movies. Juts like that, out of nothing. Hooray! One day I turned PIN on for the app and it stopped playing videos with the "Video is unavailable" error. Turned PIN off - it started to work again.

IDK if it will be your case. Can imagine that there are many factors that might cause this issue. Good luck!

This happened for me, trying to watch on my Roku (Ted Lasso). It worked fine on phone, so I was about to contact customer support for help, and I tried it again to get the exact wording of the error message…and it worked. Maybe playing it on a different device jumpstarted it somehow.

Definitely a bug I hope they fix, but hopefully this trick will help others having the same problem.
