Ipad screen has a massive grey bar through it??

I turned on my Ipad this morning, and it seemed to be working just fine, except that there was a thick, pixilated grey bar right through my screen. I tried restarting it several times, but nothing changed. I connected it to power and it didn't go away. I haven't tried connecting it to my computer yet, as my computer is broken at the moment (not my fault, I'm just really unlucky) but I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, so that wouldn't help anyway. I haven't dropped my ipad, put it in heat or humidity, got water on it, put it in extreme cold or treated my ipad roughly. It stays in a case safely on my desk whenever its not in use. I have only had it for just over two months, so I am very annoyed that it has broken after such a short time. Anyone have any advice?

Hm...one common thread that seems to be coming thro' in the posts is that people who bought their ipads in Dec 2010 seem to be having this issue a lot...faulty batch of screens received by Apple from its suppliers for that batch?

I am told the only option if one does not want to accept Apple's offer to buy a new I pad at a slight discount is to get the entire screen with connectors replaced and there are a number of people in US and Europe who do that -who are not necessarily authorised by Apple. Apparently those components are easily available and costs about $ 75-100. I've sent my to my brother in LA in the US and he's come up with quite a few people who have quoted between $75-150 to fix it. Of course this is taking a risk since they are not authorised, but then what do we have to lose given the I pad right now is practically useless.

I bought my Ipad May 2010, and today the grey bar is in the middle of my screen. Not much to do on it, given that it occupies so much room on there. I haven't called Apple yet, but I'm hoping I get some type of discount or great offer as a couple of you have. I tried resetting it, plugging it into the computer to reset it but it doesn't get rid of the bar.

Turned my iPad on this morning, and lo and behold I have a huge grey stripe running across it. The device hasn't taken any knocks or spills, and I've barely used it despite owning it for over a year, so it came as a complete shock. The price quoted for reparation on Apple's site is almost as much as it costs for a brand new iPad 2, so I don't think I'll be going down that route. Currently looking at unauthorised repair centres to see if I can get a good deal, but needless to say I'm very disappointed in Apple's faulty product and expensive service.

That $uck$. I wanted to get mine fixed, but given that I have no warranty anymore, I don't have a guarantee that it won't happen again, so why bother. I received $140 back for my first generation Ipad...I was disappointed, given that I spent around $850 for it (64GB with wifi/3g). I kept it in a case at all times, and I never removed the original plastic that came with it, so it was in great condition, other than the grey bar of death of course. I could do anything if it weren't for that bar. Oh well.
