Ipad screen has a massive grey bar through it??

I turned on my Ipad this morning, and it seemed to be working just fine, except that there was a thick, pixilated grey bar right through my screen. I tried restarting it several times, but nothing changed. I connected it to power and it didn't go away. I haven't tried connecting it to my computer yet, as my computer is broken at the moment (not my fault, I'm just really unlucky) but I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, so that wouldn't help anyway. I haven't dropped my ipad, put it in heat or humidity, got water on it, put it in extreme cold or treated my ipad roughly. It stays in a case safely on my desk whenever its not in use. I have only had it for just over two months, so I am very annoyed that it has broken after such a short time. Anyone have any advice?

Today, January 8th, 2013, the same thing happened to my iPad. Used it yesterday just fine but when I turned it on today it had the grayish colored bar with different colored stripes running across the screen. It's really disappointing since my iPad is in perfect condition. I haven't called Apple yet to see if they would fix it or replace it but I have a feeling it will cost more than it's worth. I had bought it in October 2012 so it does seem to be an issue with iPads sold during this time period. Just thought I'd add to the forum in hopes that Apple will see just how many people are having this problem

That $uck$. I wanted to get mine fixed, but given that I have no warranty anymore, I don't have a guarantee that it won't happen again, so why bother. I received $140 back for my first generation Ipad...I was disappointed, given that I spent around $850 for it (64GB with wifi/3g). I kept it in a case at all times, and I never removed the original plastic that came with it, so it was in great condition, other than the grey bar of death of course. I could do anything if it weren't for that bar. Oh well.

Same issue on Ist gen iPad purchased Oct 2010 in the UK. Phoned Apple Support, had a row, got nowhere really. Really dissapointed with response from Apple and the total denial that there is clearly an issue with the iPad. They have offered me a new 1st gen iPad for £199. Considering the original version cost me £599, then after less than two years it makes for a pretty expensive iPad experience! The very least they should be doing is offering a new version iPad for the reduced price. I think there is a consumer case in the UK called "fit for purpose" or something which ensures that goods you buy will work for a reasonable length of time without fault. I think this iPad issue is going to test the theory.

Well let me add another one to the ever growing list of ipad screen failures. My daughter's ipad, which had been working fine, just grew the same thick grey bar and some coloured lines right across the middle of the screen.

Now the other similar thing is that this was also purchased in December 2010, as a Christmas present, so really starting to look like there is a fault in the batches sold around that time.

I am in the UK and from what I've read on here, it doesn't sound like Apple are going to be a lot of help, so I'm thinking of going back to the store where it was bought with the Sale of Goods Act in mind. I would say that any reasonable person would expect on of these to last for more that 2 years without total failure. As it seems Apple don't want to repair them, then they are accepting that the item is broken and for the dustbin and I would expect something costing that amount to last longer than this has done. Lets see how we get on - once my daughter gets the proof of purchase from her boyfriend, who bought it for her.

Following the dissapointing offer from Apple, I made some enquiries with the store I purchased the iPad from with the Sale of Goods act in mind. They have said that I need to have an engineers report completed, which they will do at my cost, £80. If the report then decides that the problem is a component failure they will cover 70% of the repair costs including parts and labour. I have no idea what the repair would cost so equaly have no idea what the 30% will cost me after i've paid out for the engineers report. Perhaps the Apple offer of a new 1st Gen iPad for £199 is a better deal?? More likely I will spend £150 on a new Nexus 7 and look forward to a Samsung Galaxy phone when my Blackberry contract expires!

I had the same thing happen to me the other day. iPad was working fine and then picked it up to check email and nothing but gray and white bars on the screen. I bought the iPad in October 2010 and have taken great care of it. Took it to the Apple Store and the "genius" said it was a hardware problem and "these things happen with electronics". It would cost $249 to fix and I only get a 90 warranty on it or I could buy an iPad2 for roughly $399. I had a 32GB iPad and the iPad2 was only 16GB. I was obviously very frustrated with the lack of support and left the store. I can't believe Apple is turning a blind eye to this with an obvious flaw in this product. It is only 2 years old and they are supporting their customers since they know there is nothing we can do. Very disappointing to say the least. I wish an Apple representative would do something about this.

So looking like there is no easy fix for this. My wife now has the "grey bar of death" and I got her the iPad Sep of 2010. I am not against getting new one but would be nice to hand this one down. 2 years is not a good life span for something that costs so much.

Still on the look out for a fix but I think it's safe to call this a known issue,.

I received the grey bar of death a month ago. I went to turn it on one day and the grey bar was there. It is very discouraging since I kept it in mint condition. I purchased the 32GB model in Nov 2010. I sent a letter to Apple but no reply. This definitely seems like a manufacturing defect, and I am amazed that Apple has turned a blind-eye to this problem.

Sadly, with the lack of customer service and an obvious logic board defect, I vowed never to spend that much on a tablet again. I bought a Nexus 7 with 2-year warranty for $220. I figure, I at least get two years out of it. I love Apple products but don't have the heart to spend $600 on another one that might fail.

Purchased 2 ipads in fall of 2010 - one of the 2 so far has the grey bar across the middle of the screen. I really can not believe a reputable company won't step up and back up it's product. This is a discusting show of customer service. Apple please back up your products before we are forced to go to the alternative products.

Thanks

From my research, the problem is caused from a defective logic board. I looked at the prices of a logic board and figured for the price I could just get a Nexus 7. I don't regret it either. Android can play any movie or audio format I throw at it. Plus, the chrome web browser has yet to crash on me. Safari always use to crash on me.

I have had two major problems with Apple and customer service didn't even respond. I have the 2008 iMac with ATI 2400 graphic chip that constantly freezes with Snow Leopard or higher OS. It is a known issue and Apple has never addressed it. I have such a bad taste for a company that was suppose to be all about their customers, yet they don't support their products.

I have read many of these posts regarding the gray stripe on the iPad 1st generation. I can certainly relate to what most have said, I too have the gray stripe a little above the middle of the screen that blocks the view of the screen from reading. My iPad was purchased February 2011 and I do not have the warrenty on it. It seems to me that something should be done with all these complaints of having this problem. Maybe a class action should be filed because it appears that it is a rip off that is occuring.

I went to use my 1st Gen iPad 32GB the other day and there was a large grey bar a few inches big. The touch function still works behind this bar but I obviously can't use the device very well. The iPad was purchased in October 2010 in the UK which seems to be a common timeframe in these posts. I called apple support and they were not very helpful to say the least. They say that I have to book an appointment to see what they can do. I haven't gone yet so hopefully they will be able to do something but I don't think they will. Apple seem to be able to fix these problems but say they can't so that you buy a refurbished model. It is ridiculous to think that I paid hundreds of pounds for this product and it only lasted 26 months.
