Ipad screen has a massive grey bar through it??

I turned on my Ipad this morning, and it seemed to be working just fine, except that there was a thick, pixilated grey bar right through my screen. I tried restarting it several times, but nothing changed. I connected it to power and it didn't go away. I haven't tried connecting it to my computer yet, as my computer is broken at the moment (not my fault, I'm just really unlucky) but I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, so that wouldn't help anyway. I haven't dropped my ipad, put it in heat or humidity, got water on it, put it in extreme cold or treated my ipad roughly. It stays in a case safely on my desk whenever its not in use. I have only had it for just over two months, so I am very annoyed that it has broken after such a short time. Anyone have any advice?

Today, January 8th, 2013, the same thing happened to my iPad. Used it yesterday just fine but when I turned it on today it had the grayish colored bar with different colored stripes running across the screen. It's really disappointing since my iPad is in perfect condition. I haven't called Apple yet to see if they would fix it or replace it but I have a feeling it will cost more than it's worth. I had bought it in October 2012 so it does seem to be an issue with iPads sold during this time period. Just thought I'd add to the forum in hopes that Apple will see just how many people are having this problem

I have read many of these posts regarding the gray stripe on the iPad 1st generation. I can certainly relate to what most have said, I too have the gray stripe a little above the middle of the screen that blocks the view of the screen from reading. My iPad was purchased February 2011 and I do not have the warrenty on it. It seems to me that something should be done with all these complaints of having this problem. Maybe a class action should be filed because it appears that it is a rip off that is occuring.

I went to use my 1st Gen iPad 32GB the other day and there was a large grey bar a few inches big. The touch function still works behind this bar but I obviously can't use the device very well. The iPad was purchased in October 2010 in the UK which seems to be a common timeframe in these posts. I called apple support and they were not very helpful to say the least. They say that I have to book an appointment to see what they can do. I haven't gone yet so hopefully they will be able to do something but I don't think they will. Apple seem to be able to fix these problems but say they can't so that you buy a refurbished model. It is ridiculous to think that I paid hundreds of pounds for this product and it only lasted 26 months.

I had my screen repaired at www.techknowspace.ca in Mississauga/Toronto for $159.99. Works great now! A lot cheaper than Apple Canada's offering of $250 for a refurb replacement!!! Now onto fixing my 2year old iMac that just died for second time in 1 month. Getting a little P-O'd at the ***** warranty on what is pitched to be a superior product with a superior price tag!!!

I had the exact same problem recently; I woke up one morning to have found a large grey bar across the screen of my IPad 1st Generation 64 gb. When I went to the store I was told that "this happens" and that "some IPads are faulty". Then I was given a lecture about how I should have purchased Apple Care because it was no longer covered under warranty. Repairing the screen would cost me $250. Seeing as I bought the original IPad for $750, I don't understand why on earth they think I'd be willing to invest $1000 in a product that apparently can just break overnight. Sadly I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy a Kindle Fire. Definitely a disappointing day, and definitely very disappointed in Apple, seeing as this seems to be a common issue that they haven't addressed. If anyone is trying to get a case together addressing this issue please let me know.

I bought the new ipad in May of 2012 and was happy with it until about nov-dec 2012. The right side of the screen started going grey with lines through it. It would eventually resolve itself but started happening more frequently. I couldn't back up my data before I did a restore because it had gotten so bad that I was unable to unlock the passcode to do the backup. Did a restore anyway. Lost everything. Very ******. I also stopped using the griffin survivor case at this time. The problem still happens but less often. In hindsight I remember that putting the ipad into the case was sometimes quite tight to snap the clips into place. Maybe caused pressure on the touch screen? I bought my ipad in Vancouver and now live in Sao Paulo. There is no apple store but there are service providers. I hope my warranty still covers any hardware issues. Regardless, it's samsung from here on in. Fu Q apple

Gray bar of death struck my daughter's ipad1 just as described in so many of the posts here. Based on what I had read in the posts my expectations were low that the Apple Store would do anything decent to fix or replace the defective ipad1. Wow was I wrong! $99 to replace it with a NEW ipad1, three month warrenty, no hassle, no haggling, and the rep was serving us within 5 mins. of walking through the door even though the place was packed. Apple Store, La Cantera, San Antonio, Texas, and especially our rep Chris G., you are AWESOME! Thanks!

Same thing with the IPAD 2. Two weeks it happened that the grey bar appeared. Went to the apple store and it was a really frustrating experience. My IPAD is 20 month old and I have not purchased the apple extensive care plan, as I expected a product this expensive to last longer than two years. Oh, how wrong I was .I got offered to either buy a new ipad2 with a 10% discount (i.e. 40 €) or to get a refurbished one for 230 €. This is ridiculous. The discussion with two store managers went nowhere. So I am stuck... any one any advise. Maybe some Apple representative to comment on this?

I would really like to hear from Apple about this... I use my iPad constantly for travel and it's always been such a good device. Today out of nowhere though it has grey bars across the screen... I tried resetting it... restoring it... I looked online to try to find out what's going on, and I can't get any answers... I've read that it was caused by the logic board, screen, misc. faulty hardware but no deff fixes. I have to fly out tomorrow and don't have time to take it to the apple store now. 😟 If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it,

😟 I have the original iPad, and had no idea when I put my perfect little iPad to bed last night that it would be the last time I would be able to use it fully functional. Everything that everyone is saying lines up with what I woke up to this morning. I tried the same things as y'all thinking that this was like the "black screen of death" that it had survived not too long ago. I am able to log in (because I am guessing the placement of numbers that I have memorized over the use of my ipad), and the touch sensitivity is in no way affected. The problem is that I just can't see what is behind the gray (sometimes completely black) bars. I know that typing this is in no way going to fix anyone elses problem, but I feel such a loss, that it helps me. You don't spend money on something so expensive, take good care of it, use it daily, and expect it to tear up. It's a little emotional. So, good luck to all who have had this problem. I pray that you can fix it and if I can I will let you know. Hopefully this will at least comfort and validate someone else who has had this issue.
