Ipad screen has a massive grey bar through it??

I turned on my Ipad this morning, and it seemed to be working just fine, except that there was a thick, pixilated grey bar right through my screen. I tried restarting it several times, but nothing changed. I connected it to power and it didn't go away. I haven't tried connecting it to my computer yet, as my computer is broken at the moment (not my fault, I'm just really unlucky) but I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, so that wouldn't help anyway. I haven't dropped my ipad, put it in heat or humidity, got water on it, put it in extreme cold or treated my ipad roughly. It stays in a case safely on my desk whenever its not in use. I have only had it for just over two months, so I am very annoyed that it has broken after such a short time. Anyone have any advice?

Today, January 8th, 2013, the same thing happened to my iPad. Used it yesterday just fine but when I turned it on today it had the grayish colored bar with different colored stripes running across the screen. It's really disappointing since my iPad is in perfect condition. I haven't called Apple yet to see if they would fix it or replace it but I have a feeling it will cost more than it's worth. I had bought it in October 2012 so it does seem to be an issue with iPads sold during this time period. Just thought I'd add to the forum in hopes that Apple will see just how many people are having this problem

I was just lecturing my children about not looking after the ipad properly until I came across this email thread. We have the exact same problem on a Ipad first generation purchased in June of the first year they were issued. I suppose being 'Apple' that means I'm screwed? If so, I don't think I will be buying another one from them! Of to the genius bar, for me!

No luck at the Apple Store unless I wanted to pay $250 for a refurbished 1st gen replacement. No deal. They say unless Apple acknowledges that its a known problem they can't do anything. Just to try another longshot tactic, I posted a photo of my screen on Twitter, and told people who have a similar problem to retweet. Encourage everyone else who has the problem to do the same.

Scratch up another grey blurred bar across an iPad2 screen. Touch screen function is fine, all other systems go - sure is frustrating. I'll be heading off to the Apple Store to see what help I can get in Australia, but from all the posts above I know what to expect...

I just got a new iPad 4 and was thinking of selling my iPad 1st generation then this suddenly happened to my device. Somehow my iPad 1st generation knew I got a new device and got jealous! Anyway, mine isn't a complete gray bar but a fuzzy rainbow stripe...similar but not exactly the same. So a few thoughts....

1) It seems some stores are willing to help, others are not and some strike the lottery when they get a free replacement. If you get a free replacement, give the store details and maybe a employee name? We can all go there for the same!!!

2) It isn't clear if this is a screen issue or a logic board....some have said they got this fixed with a screen replacement but can anyone verify if that was all that was done? Replacement screens are fairly cheap on eBay and simple install.

3) It is a really poor experience when different stores have different policies...makes me wonder if I went to five different Apple stores, what would happen at each?

Yeah, i got the same story. $250 for a "new" original ipad 1st gen that would suffer from all the same annoying (but tolderable) out of date technology issues my 1.0 suffered from before the screen went completely bonkers. Not worth it for what isn't really a necessity for me. Did talk to the manager who offered to give me 20% off a new current version ipad, but that would still cost me something like $400 to replace. She also said I could try dealing with Apple directly and gave me a number to call there. Havn't had time to follow up yet, though.

For a follow-up on this....it was my LCD screen. I bought a replacement on eBay for ~$70 then had to pull the thing apart. PITA install but not too hard...if your iPad is busted what do you have to lose? I woudln't spend more than $100 to fix it but it is nice to have a spare with 3G for trips and such.

Word of advice, buy a screen with GOOD tools, my tools all broke (cheap plastic) and I had to buy a Torx screwdriver since I was sent a philips head. duhh?

Second, amazingly enough a guitar pick is a really good tool to open this thing up. Buy spare clips, they will break...and if you really want a clean new look, buy a new bezel (rubber grommit around the screen and case).

Took me about 30 minutes after watching some videos online...not all videos are the same, look at a couple of them...everyone has a few good tips the others leave out.

I also have the iPad 1 that was bought for me as a Christmas gift. Then this year I bought a Ipad2 , my grandson bought my old ipad an after 3 months same thing happened gray bar. I agree 100 % anyone that has this problem should start class action lawsuit. It's a crying shame that us consumers pay big bucks for something like this, and now it's unusable . Apple needs to give all of new iPad

Looks like apple didn't like my last post inquiring about anyone knowing a lawyer to take on this class action. They deleted it within minutes.

I think it is so despicable that they aren't doing anything about it. There is obvious a huge flaw with the display in the 1st generation iPad and their answer is to have you basically buys a new one?

How ridiculous is that?
