Can't get a usable blu-ray copy to play in a Blu-Ray DVD player to show on TV.

I create the movie/video file and when I go to "share" the project, the only option given is "Blu-Ray/AVCHD". So I "share" to a project file on the desktop and it plays wonderfully via QuickTime, but when I burn that file to Blu-Ray DVD on an external burner, the result is not playable on the TV via a Blu-Ray player. The player says it is a "data" disk, not video. Where did I go wrong?

As you've been told you need an app that can create and burn a playable Blu-Ray video/project. Go to the App Store and search fro Blu-Ray creator. You'll get this app that can do what you want:

You can also do a Google search for "blu-ray creator for mac" and get a number of options. Some have demo versions which you can try. They will probably put a watermark on the output but you can test it so see how easy it is or not.

What I don't understand and don't need to as long as it works, is will exporting an MP4 play directly without any other software manipulation.

Yes. Once exported, it can be copied to any other drive as a data file. The disk or USB stick doesn't need to be in any particular kind of video format.

You could burn the .mp4 to a DVD if you want with the built-in Burn utility. It just needs to be under 4.2 GB to fit on a single layer disk. That's where data disks are nice. What would normally be a Blu-ray resolution video doesn't have to be on a Blu-ray disk. You can use just about any drive or disk type the file fits on. Just as long as your player can read it.

I've been trying so many options and steps, I forgot how I got an MPEG4:-). Anyway, I had one on the desktop as a trial and copied it to a USB. Put it my old Sony and it wouldn't read it. Put it in my newer LG and magic...it not only played but the clarity was awesome. So, everyone and especially Kurt, I am back onto my iMAC and FCP to begin creating the video...in steps so I can make little MPEG4's to test, then joining them all together for the final cut. It's been a very long and frustrating process, but you all hung in there with me. I am so grateful for your support and patience....peace
