Hi mmmmmarknoel,
Screen mirroring from one MacBook Air to another MacBook Air is not supported. as shown here:
Extend or mirror your Mac desktop across multiple displays - Apple Support
Note: If you are using a Mac laptop or iMac, you must have an external display connected to your Mac to see these options. If you are using a device with no built-in display, such as a Mac mini or Mac Studio, you must have more than one display connected to see these options.
Take care!

Hi mmmmmarknoel
I had the same problem as you and, after exploring for a few minutes, I found out that a had the airplay option unchecked on my target device.
Only god knows why it was enabled on my main device in the first place
Take a look and check if that also solves the problem for you.
hi!
thank you for the response! actually, i was able to screen mirror the other way around, using my mba m1 as my main display and my mba m2 as an extended display through airplay but if i'm doing it using the mba m2 as the main display, i just can't. i just really don't know know why.
and also, i tried using the charging cable to connect both MBAs and i was able to screen mirror with mba m1 as the main display. i use my mba m2 as my main so i want my mba m1 to be the extended display but it just can't detect display and i hate it.
mmmmmarknoel,
To clarify, the expected behavior is this feature would not work from Mac to Mac in that manner. You would need a dedicated external display.
If you can screen share from the M1 to the M2, that is unexpected behavior and may not continue in the future.
Cheers!
It's a shame because that would be pretty useful for a lot of cases.
I was able to extend the display from M1 13 to a M1 PRO 16 without issues. When trying 16 -> 13 it only shows the 13 at "Link keyboard and mouse to". It doesn't show at "Mirror or extend to" section.
That would give me one more reason to keep the 13 instead of selling it.
