Your phone likely has a damaged battery, IMMEDIATELY contact a repair center and keep the phone in a sealed and secure container and away from burnable objects, preferably outside. This device may be a fire risk.

Troubleshooting an Overheating-Dropped iPhone:
Any Corrosion?
I am wondering if it is a corrosive battery. Do you see any lumps on the iPhone? If so, it is corroding, and that makes this a health hazard. So, if corrosion is occurring, you should get this serviced, ASAP.
Contact Apple Support:
A. Contacting Apple Support:
B. Contacting an AASP:
Also, look into taking it to an AASP(Apple Authorized Service Provider) seeing if they offer service for this.
Then, you need to take the phone to an Apple Store or authorized Apple Service shop to let them take a look. Chances are, the phone is not going to be repairable at this point, but you won't know until you know.
Use the link below to locate an authorized shop near you.

No lumps it powers on when plugged in but heats up and gives the temperature message on the screen and then goes dark. Thank you for your information as well. I just don’t know where I can take it. It’s an older phone obviously, but it still works great other than this issue, I don’t have any coverage with Apple anymore.
