Apple CarPlay GPS wrong location issue

Hello,

I bought a car with CarPlay functionality (RAV4 limited 2023). I am using it with an iPhone 13 pro under IOS16.4.1a (latest OS to date). CarPlay works except for navigation apps. When I use either Waze, Google maps or Apple maps, the location gets switched between the actual current location and somewhere 20-30 meters from the car. Therefore the GPS guidance doesn't work since the actual location is incorrect.

GPS apps on the iPhone works fine when not connected with CarPlay in this car. GPS navigation system from the car works fine when the phone is not connected.

I tried to start GPS apps first before connecting it to the car. It usually works for a few minutes (1-5 minutes) then the location is again off by 20-30 meters. I tried to start the GPS apps after I connect the phone to the car and I get the same result.

If I disconnect the phone, the car and iPhone GPS give me correct location. If I reconnect them, both give me the wrong location. When the car is not moving, the wrong location remains at the same spot even after I

disconnect/reconnect the phone. So it's not giving a random location. It's off by 20-30 meters.

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

Update: With CarPlay in my 2023 VW Taos, the GPS will suddenly and unexpectedly show me to be in the wrong location. The error is several hundred feet to several miles. This is very dangerous when you are on a highlway and it suddenly tells you to turn on a road that does not exist. I updated my iPhone to iOS 17.0.2. It did not help. I have rebooted both the car system and the phone. It does not help. Most recently, this happened when I was parked in my driveway. I was connected to CarPlay. The map in the car AND on my phone showed the same WRONG location. I simply turned off Wi-Fi on my phone and immediately as the iphone disconnected from the car, the map on my phone switched to the correct location. Incidentally, my phone works fine with CarPlay in my Bolt.

I have the same head unit and the same issue for years with different phones including iPhone 14 Pro that has the two GPS antennas for the most precise location ability . I moved the GPS antenna for the head unit, which was installed inside the dash just below the center dash speaker, and placed it on top of the dash near the windshield. After 7+ days, the issue has not returned.

This issue can easily be resolved permanently by a Simple iOS patch.

Cause : The Car play is confused when it receives GPS info from Vehicle. But it works perfectly as long as it keeps using the connect device's GPS antenna.

Patch : If iOS can bring a toggle to give flexibility to device owner to override Car play setting to Use connected device's GPS always or until it is available, then The Problem will never ever occur in any device/any Vehicle/Any Car play version.

But Apple seems to be in denial mode as far as it concerns.

Apple does not want to give any flexibility to end user for anything.

This is the Reason why Android Auto works so smooth and consistently.

Till then Use 2 device.

For Show Off: iOS device

For practical Usability and Connected vehicle purpose: Android Flagship device.

When I connect my iPhone to my car and I notice that my gps is off, I check my Compass app. Every time my iPhone Compass app show me about 10 times higher. I live at about 1200 ft of elevation and the compass shows me at 12,000 ft of elevation. As soon as I disconnect my phone from my car, the compass elevation goes back to normal. My theory is that an incorrect altitude could give the illusion that it works sometime and not others.

I’m curious if your compass elevation is changing too.

Fellow VW folks, I've had the same GPS issue with my 2023 Taos since the end of last year and have not been able to resolve it. VW is well aware of it as it has just been confirmed by my local dealer. They also tell me that there is no fix, and have no idea when there will be one. I asked about getting a brand new head unit since the car is under warranty but was met with the sound of crickets.

Sadly, the only way I have been able to get a Carplay experience is by having purchased a "Wireless Carplay Adapter" which is a pretty garbage way to go about things.

Finally fixed mine! Had the issue where CarPlay maps was showing me about 20 meters off the road, giving me wrong turn directions. Basically the fix is to use wired CarPlay instead of bluetooth connection, and to make sure you disconnect the navigation antenna from the back of the head unit.

I basically went into the radio settings and deleted the bluetooth account so my phone wouldn't connect via bluetooth, got a usb to lightning connector for my phone and plugged that into the back of the radio. I also went into settings on my phone and found the wifi connection for the radio and turned it off and changed the setting to "auto connect: no"

Even with all of those settings turned off and the phone connected to CarPlay with a wire, the navigation still showed the wrong location, UNTIL I physically disconnected the navigation antenna from the radio. Tested it for 6 hours driving everywhere yesterday and can confirm that it now works flawlessly.

Yes, I lost wireless connection to the radio but I always charge my phone in the car anyways so needs to be plugged in for that.

So glad it finally works!

After months of frustration and considering the various causes and fixes, I think the poor quality GPS signal to the vehicle's GPS device is the primary cause. (See post from June 30, 2023 by dangerman)

Unfortunately, it does not appear that the vehicle makers or Apple care to fix the problem. One fix is to allow the phone to ignore the vehicle's GPS source and choose to use the phone's own location. CrisPistol proposed forcing this manually by disabling the vehicle's GPS source.
