Apple CarPlay GPS wrong location issue

Hello,

I bought a car with CarPlay functionality (RAV4 limited 2023). I am using it with an iPhone 13 pro under IOS16.4.1a (latest OS to date). CarPlay works except for navigation apps. When I use either Waze, Google maps or Apple maps, the location gets switched between the actual current location and somewhere 20-30 meters from the car. Therefore the GPS guidance doesn't work since the actual location is incorrect.

GPS apps on the iPhone works fine when not connected with CarPlay in this car. GPS navigation system from the car works fine when the phone is not connected.

I tried to start GPS apps first before connecting it to the car. It usually works for a few minutes (1-5 minutes) then the location is again off by 20-30 meters. I tried to start the GPS apps after I connect the phone to the car and I get the same result.

If I disconnect the phone, the car and iPhone GPS give me correct location. If I reconnect them, both give me the wrong location. When the car is not moving, the wrong location remains at the same spot even after I

disconnect/reconnect the phone. So it's not giving a random location. It's off by 20-30 meters.

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

I did a case last night as well. I found information online that eventually helped. Speaking for just Pioneer radios. The radio is sending data from the vehicles speed sensor for “offline” usage in the event GPS signal is lost and CarPlay can can function offline until signal is restored. Example going through tunnels or mountains. The android auto is not using this feature from the radio so it is not effecting Android devices. I tested this yesterday. I went into the radios settings and found the 3D Calibration Status setting and was able to clear the old data. This instantly fixed my issue with CarPlay and made “My Location” in maps accurate again.

RE: jhferguson5

Thank you!

Was that for Apple Maps or Google Maps app? What exactly were you seeing as far as the format and graphics (which is really not what this thread is about)? How can I tell if there is a difference in the graphics before and after?

Here's the thing... I was experiencing exactly the same location issues with both the Apple and Google maps. Do you suspect that fixing one will fix both? I failed to check my car's native navigation maps at the time I was seeing a severe case.

It would be interesting to figure out which of those steps is the one that's the key (since there are two main steps that may be it -- 1. removing the maps app and reinstalling, and 2. removing the CarPlay profile from the iPhone-Car setup and adding it back.)

I was using Apple Maps. I just gave an update below that the steps I took have inconsistent results. It's still working for me at the moment but that luck may run out.

As far as the map display improvements, I've seen significant improvements in detail and display vibrancy, so I do think that my maps app had not updated properly previously. I realized it when I noticed the difference in my spouse's map display compared to mine.

I'm taking my vehicle to the dealership Wednesday for a firmware update.

Thanks for the updates. I'm still seeing some GPS maps location issues so I'm going to call the dealer Monday. It does seem like it's common with VWs (and Ford and BMW).

Today (Sat.) my car switched time zones from Central to Mountain. I manually set it and then it still overrode it back to the wrong zone. 🤨 I'm guessing that's a DST glitch. I guess I'll know more soon.

That's good info Lsr1238. Two questions though, esp. since they are pointing finger at Apple...

Do they claim that with the VW Apple CarPlay OTA update, it will prioritize the location sources so that CarPlay will use the location derived from the phone over the car?

When I have experienced the location issue past week, I disconnected my phone from CarPlay and checked the VW native maps and the location did not change. Which means that the incorrect location that CarPlay was using in maps (Apple & Google) was coming from the car. Also, that means that the incorrect location from the car GPC is propagating back to the apps on the phone too (while running CarPlay).

So what exactly is the VW update going to change? If you didn't get that detail from VW, can you ask them that?

Maybe prior to the last update (it seems to have gotten much worse a month or two ago like in Sept.), the phone's location info was used (if available) instead of the car's GPS location info.

ALSO... (for VW owners), do you have a green light on the roof near the SOS buttons? Usually the light is on, but sometimes not. I was wondering if that was related to the overall issue -- that is if the issue is a VW hardware/communications device problem.

Just did a 5-1/2 hour trip from south Jersey to Massachusetts and back again. On the way there, no problem. On the way back from Massachusetts to South Jersey, apple car play was useless. Thank goodness we had my husbands phone and could use it without Apple Car play. This is the second time we have had a problem on a long trip. I will never by a car again with Apple Car Play.

I agree with you Afeni16. I posted an update yesterday.

Are they loaning you a vehicle while they have yours? Here's a thread that has some info about possible VW hardware issues: https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/gps-broken-for-several-weeks.10001/

Someone mentioned the 5F module being the problem and having that replaced.

Has the dealer gotten any information from VW? Since this has been going on for a while it is a known issue. Are they intentionally keeping this a secret from the public?
