Apple CarPlay GPS wrong location issue

Hello,

I bought a car with CarPlay functionality (RAV4 limited 2023). I am using it with an iPhone 13 pro under IOS16.4.1a (latest OS to date). CarPlay works except for navigation apps. When I use either Waze, Google maps or Apple maps, the location gets switched between the actual current location and somewhere 20-30 meters from the car. Therefore the GPS guidance doesn't work since the actual location is incorrect.

GPS apps on the iPhone works fine when not connected with CarPlay in this car. GPS navigation system from the car works fine when the phone is not connected.

I tried to start GPS apps first before connecting it to the car. It usually works for a few minutes (1-5 minutes) then the location is again off by 20-30 meters. I tried to start the GPS apps after I connect the phone to the car and I get the same result.

If I disconnect the phone, the car and iPhone GPS give me correct location. If I reconnect them, both give me the wrong location. When the car is not moving, the wrong location remains at the same spot even after I

disconnect/reconnect the phone. So it's not giving a random location. It's off by 20-30 meters.

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

I did a case last night as well. I found information online that eventually helped. Speaking for just Pioneer radios. The radio is sending data from the vehicles speed sensor for “offline” usage in the event GPS signal is lost and CarPlay can can function offline until signal is restored. Example going through tunnels or mountains. The android auto is not using this feature from the radio so it is not effecting Android devices. I tested this yesterday. I went into the radios settings and found the 3D Calibration Status setting and was able to clear the old data. This instantly fixed my issue with CarPlay and made “My Location” in maps accurate again.

This problem is driving me crazy. Once it works for 10 minutes, other time it just works for 1 minute and frequently the waze app starts with my position a couple of hundred meters away.

Changing navigation app does not help. Position in the Car Nav is 100% correct. If I disconnect the phone from the car (carplay only works wired, Audi TT 2016 and iphone 13 pro) the app immediately shows correct location, to go wrong again as soon as I reconnect.

So... it seems that apple could solve the issue - even if it was woth the option of using the phone GPS instead of the car GPS when paired in Carlpay!!

Would this be difficult? Doesn't seem so, and would solve the problem for thousands of people. I guess that there should be more than one thousand affected for each post in this forum.

I am seriously considering of changing do Android phones in order for this feature it to work correctly (my wife's android works flawless, 100% of the times). I guess apple is simply not worried with its community problems, and this is a potential safety issue!

DKB - It seems that several car makers have bad GPS devices that frequently can't lock on the correct location due to issues like clouds or haze. Apple makes it worse by only using the vehicle's location while using CarPlay.

Vehicle manufacturers need to fix the GPS devices.
Apple needs to allow the phone and CarPlay to fail back to the phone's location. Allow the user to override the GPS source.
Neither the vehicle mfrs nor Apple seem at all interested in fixing this.
It can be very dangerous.

Good luck! If you spend 4 hours dealing with Apple like I did, nothing will come of it except a huge waste of time.

What make/model head unit? Where was this calibration? My head unit doesn’t show anything like that.

I just purchased a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas a week ago and had this issue multiple times its so annoying when it happens especially when you are in a congested city and not sure where to go.

I have the same issue with my T6. Kenwood came back to me to say GPS antenna in wrong location. Suggested I move it to dashboard. Hope this works as I really love stereo and CarPlay

Tried looking for this, just to be able to use the CarPlay GPS, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to figure out how to reset it. Could you help us out with this, please?

Also, has Apple or Toyota helped with this problem so far? Have they even acknowledged that it IS a thing? It’s frustrating to buy a new vehicle and have this specific thing be an issue when the sole purpose of CarPlay is to mitigate the use of a phone while driving. 🥲

i just got a 2023 ford edge with apple car play. Recently went on a road trip and my navigation was useless. Kept telling me to “proceed to route” then would work for a few minutes and the back to “ proceed to route” very annoying.

Yes. We had the exact same problem. I don’t understand why car manufacturers are installing apple car play. It’s useless for navigation. Everybody having this problem should complain. I filed a complaint with Ford.

Exactly, I have to figure out if you can disconnect easily while on the move. It just makes me mad because it seems a lot of people are having this problem. Somebody should be responsible for fixing this problem. Especially, with the price of cars, these problems should be fixed.

Absolutely pathetic...

it was showing my location off by a little over a HALF a MILE! while they were on the phone with me trying to help but not helping.

Yes! Note to Apple: This can be a very dangerous driving issue when navigating in unfamiliar, busy areas!!

I'm not sure how they would not be sued for negligence here.

This is potentially EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and LIFE THREATENING!
