Apple CarPlay GPS wrong location issue

Hello,

I bought a car with CarPlay functionality (RAV4 limited 2023). I am using it with an iPhone 13 pro under IOS16.4.1a (latest OS to date). CarPlay works except for navigation apps. When I use either Waze, Google maps or Apple maps, the location gets switched between the actual current location and somewhere 20-30 meters from the car. Therefore the GPS guidance doesn't work since the actual location is incorrect.

GPS apps on the iPhone works fine when not connected with CarPlay in this car. GPS navigation system from the car works fine when the phone is not connected.

I tried to start GPS apps first before connecting it to the car. It usually works for a few minutes (1-5 minutes) then the location is again off by 20-30 meters. I tried to start the GPS apps after I connect the phone to the car and I get the same result.

If I disconnect the phone, the car and iPhone GPS give me correct location. If I reconnect them, both give me the wrong location. When the car is not moving, the wrong location remains at the same spot even after I

disconnect/reconnect the phone. So it's not giving a random location. It's off by 20-30 meters.

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

I did a case last night as well. I found information online that eventually helped. Speaking for just Pioneer radios. The radio is sending data from the vehicles speed sensor for “offline” usage in the event GPS signal is lost and CarPlay can can function offline until signal is restored. Example going through tunnels or mountains. The android auto is not using this feature from the radio so it is not effecting Android devices. I tested this yesterday. I went into the radios settings and found the 3D Calibration Status setting and was able to clear the old data. This instantly fixed my issue with CarPlay and made “My Location” in maps accurate again.

Update Kenwood media player in VW T6

- Apple CarPlay GPS wrong location issue

Kenwood instructed me to re locate Kenwood GPS antenna on top of the dashboard near windscreen on passenger side. (Current location was on top of unit, under the dashboard)

This has worked and my CarPlay navigation is now working correctly.

It seems the issue was the GPS antenna was losing accuracy due to poor signal. Kenwood also believe it was made worse by T6 heated windscreen.

Hope this is helpful

I’m having the same issue. When having the issue, I have noticed that my compass shows my altitude higher by exactly 10x. I live a 1250 feet elevation. When in CarPlay mode and the navigation isn’t working, my compass would say 12500. I believe that this is why the navigation appears to be intermittent. Pending on where the satellite is, me at 12,000 ft, and if it lines up with the street that I’m actually on.

My car (VW Atlas CrossSport) requires WiFi to be on for CarPlay.

Same:

  1. Fire up Apple Maps, shows EXACTLY where I am.
  2. Fire up GAIA GPS and it shows my accuracy as +/- 15 feet
  3. Turn on Car Play with my Denon, as soon as it shows up, I move 300 feet NE
  4. GAIA GPS shows my accuracy as still +/- 15 feet (WRONG)
  5. Disconnect from my Denon, I am back to where I should be
  6. Cable to my Honda, and it’s stays accurate.

Dead reconning is the feature where a car will use it’s other sensors to ‘kinda’ keep you in the right spot with a loss of signal but still show you where you are at. This is broken/messed up. For me I felt like this started happening with a firmware upgrade to my Denon.

Do your phone maps show the correct position when not connected via CarPlay? If so, you need a car software update. Just remember that after your dealer has updated system & maps software, it might still show the wrong position. You will need to drive your car for a couple of miles for it to pick up the satellites again, after which the position should fix itself.

I took my VW Atlas 2021 to the dealership and this is what they told me.

There is no repairs at this time. It is on the apple communication side with VW. VW is aware of the concern and it occurred with Apple's latest update. They have no ETA at this moment when the update will be available but it will come over the air, so you we get an alert for the update through the infotainment screen.

When I connect my iPhone to my car and I notice that my gps is off, I check my Compass app. Every time my iPhone Compass app show me about 10 times higher. I live at about 1200 ft of elevation and the compass shows me at 12,000 ft of elevation. As soon as I disconnect my phone from my car, the compass elevation goes back to normal. My theory is that an incorrect altitude could give the illusion that it works sometime and not others.

I’m curious if your compass elevation is changing too.

After months of frustration and considering the various causes and fixes, I think the poor quality GPS signal to the vehicle's GPS device is the primary cause. (See post from June 30, 2023 by dangerman)

Unfortunately, it does not appear that the vehicle makers or Apple care to fix the problem. One fix is to allow the phone to ignore the vehicle's GPS source and choose to use the phone's own location. CrisPistol proposed forcing this manually by disabling the vehicle's GPS source.
