the battery on my apple watch (series 8), purchased in late march, suddenly drains much quicker. i've only had it for a little over a month and i didn't change any settings so this is quite baffling to me.
any idea what is going on?

Something else is going on here. This battery draining started happening all of a sudden to me as well with no change in my usage patterns but after the last update. It was a series 7 so I figured it was time to upgrade anyway. I bought a series 9 yesterday, set it up and the battery is draining in a matter of like 3 hours. This has to be a software issue. I did the remedies above even though I shouldn’t have to on a new watch. They do not work. Please help.

This happened to me too. It was fine yesterday and today after charging it overnight at 11 am it was at 30%. It is also taking a long time to charge.

A 3 month old Apple Watch is still within warranty. Contact Apple Support and arrange to get it checked by Apple.
Yes same issue here! Run at 100%, done and bam! Random restart and shut down, 10% battery. Put back on charger, back to 80% within 15 minutes. I have the watch se. And can not up data . Software

Unpairing and restoring from the very recent backup totally fixed the horrible battery drain from 10.4. This is on an Apple Watch Series 4 too!
When my watch can get fixed? It's 2 weeks already, I just think should change to a different phone and watch
