the battery on my apple watch (series 8), purchased in late march, suddenly drains much quicker. i've only had it for a little over a month and i didn't change any settings so this is quite baffling to me.
any idea what is going on?

Make sure to turn off background app refresh and check walkie talkie is not accidentally turned on.
Check there is no workout running (yellow circle at top if screen.)
Make sure you have no VPN or VPN based ad-blocker on the iphone. Uninstall it then remove any profiles (iPhone Settings, General VPN & Device Management)
Force restart your watch i.e. press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, then release both buttons when you see the Apple logo.
Then while the Watch is restarting Force Restart the paired iphone Force restart iPhone – Apple Support (UK)
Try it for a couple of days especially if you sync photos to your Watch.
If the battery still drains then Unpair the watch and then pair it again.

My Apple Watch is brand new, I have only had it for three months. My battery only last six hours now, and started yesterday with the battery drain. Of course there’s no way to contact Apple. What are my options, because restarting it doesn’t work.
13 months old zero complaints. Since the update a couple days ago its been draining the battery 2-3 times faster. Ive tried all the suggestions so far. if this happened 3 weeks ago I would have had apple care to help me out :(
My series 5 Apple watch battery has been dying after a full night of charging to 100%, and then it dies within 5 hours, which started after the last update. No changes in usage have occurred before this, and now I cannot stand wearing this watch. I believe, to be honest, they are making them die faster to make us upgrade like they did with the iPhone 10. Just my feelings.

Conspiracy theories look even more ridiculous when written down, but a 4 year old battery is more likely to be the reason. Is it the original battery?
The link suggestion is a root cause diagnostic path, but my watch started draining itself after the last ios and watch os update. My usage pattern has not changed. My iPhone is not draining itself and I do very little on my watch. So I’d to hear something from Apple before I spend hours trying to troubleshoot.

Your problem is either watch hardware, watch battery, or software incompatibility.
The standard elimination diagnostics will help you discover which.
Same! I had an 7, updated late February and the only change was happily longer battery life. Went from 18 hours to about 36 with new watch. Until latest update. Now it’s at around 18. What’s up?? Fix it.
I use my watch for normal usage and to track exercise. This morning, I took the watch off the charger, went for a run, and noticed the battery was at 22% at 1 pm. I then charged it to 95%. Now it’s 7 pm and the battery is at 11%. I changed nothing with my usage and the watch is only a few months old.
I’m having the same issues. My Series 6 watch suddenly started dying earlier than it had previously. I decided since it was about 2 years old that I’d get a new one and solve the problem. I purchased a series 9 less than a month ago. It doesn’t last as long as my older one did. Apple claims that when using the Workout App, the battery can last up to 7 hours, so with mine lasting about 9 hours, it’s well within its advertised parameters. I even contacted Apple and they ran all kinds of diagnostic tests and everything looks good with the watch.
Apple needs to address this issue. I’m considering going with a different watch, which is unfortunate.
I have had my watch for a while and it has been fine until this weekend when now it drains past 3 hours when at full 100% in morning and by 10am it's dead, this has only started last few days but I can't go on like this it has to be the watch or software as nothing has changed on my watch
The same battery draining issue is happening with me on my Series 9. I purchased it 7 months ago. It started with slow charging. Since last 1 week my watch is taking 3 hours to fully charge. I am using the apple adapter with original cable. Still it is slow charging. Then from yesterday, the battery is draining in my apple watch without doing anything. It is discharging in 5 hours!! First I thought it was a software problem. I checked but it is running a latest software version. What should I do?
My watch won’t hold a charge for more than 8 hrs, and this just started yesterday (5/6/24). I didn’t see an update, what is going on?!?!? I had this happen with an update once, but found what “new feature” was causing the issue and turned it off. Does anyone know a fix?
