Why do I need to buy content when I already pay for the subscription

With a subscription as expensive as AppleTV why do I still need to spend even more money to watch any of the good movies or shows? It doesn’t seem fair to make your subscribers pay so much so many times. Seems pointless to have a subscription just to pay more on top of that.

There is no double charging. The Apple TV app hosts more content than just the Apple TV+ subscription catalog. The subscription is not for the app (the app itself is free), but for access to the Apple Originals a.k.a Apple TV+ catalog. Buying or renting movies or TV shows is separate from the subscription. One does not require the other. See Apple TV+ as an in-app subscription channel.

With the Apple TV app on your smart TV or third party streaming device, you can access:

Buy/rent prices are set by the supplying studios, and pretty much on par with every other content provider with buy/rent content. I.e. no honest reason to think of that as excessive, compared to anywhere else.

You’re not paying for the App. The App is free to use. You are paying for an Apple TV + subscription to watch Apple Originals. If you feel the cost of this is not worth it, you are free to cancel at any time. Or switch to one with content that you prefer. See if you like Paramount Plus better. You can start with a free trial. Tubi is free, no gimmicks apart from the odd Ad that comes up. It’s not the new blockbuster movies but if you don’t mind watching older ones to pass the time, it’s pretty good. If you have kids Disney is good.

The point you’re trying to make above is assuming Apple gets theatrical release movies for free. They dont. Instead of resenting the charges, like I said you can cancel and spend that money on a rental or another streaming service.

Sorry, I replied to the wrong person.

That last statement is simply wrong. I subscribe to most streaming services and Apple is the only one that charges over and above the subscription,

No, Apple doesn't charge over and above the subscription. You are just unclear what it is you're subscribing to. An AppleTV+ subscription gives you access to Apple's original content. Full stop. Yes, you can also buy other things from the Movie and TV stores, but they are not original content.

Amazon Prime does a similar thing. There is content that is included with Prime and content you have to buy or rent.

and costs more than almost all my other streaming services.

I haven't done a price comparison lately. However, only you can decide if what you get is worth the money to you. Personally, I don't subscribe to things solely on the basis of price. If price were the only factor, I'd stick with broadcast television. Quality and selection also matter to me.

Why must Apple massively overcharge for absolutely everything it sells, and then tell us how lucky we are.

Apple charges what the market will bear. It's called "Capitalism". You can approve or not approve, but it's the system we have in the U.S. Included in the way capitalism works is advertising. All companies try to convince you that their product is best. But another nifty feature of capitalism that you seem to have figured out is that you don't have to buy a product if it doesn't meet your needs.

Why are we paying for content when we pay a subscription fee each month? I'm cancelling.

There is only one scenario you would need to purchase Apple content with a subscription and that is in the case of watching a movie while it is still in theaters such as Argylle. You will be able to watch the movie for free exclusively from Apple when it becomes available.

Any other content that you would need to pay for is provided from other streaming services. This is the same way it works with other streamers such as Prime Video. Just because you have a Prime subscription does not mean you can view all of the content there for free.

To see only the Apple content that you can view for free, then select the Apple TV+ tab in the sidebar. If none of that content appeals to you, then I suggest you cancel the Apple TV+ service.

Just cancelled for this very reason. Limited new content and the free old

Apple's original content, what you pay for when you subscribe to AppleTV+ is not, to the best of my knowledge, available anywhere else.

I signed up for new content but it is pretty slim. And hard to find with all the stuff they are selling.

So far in May, they have released Acapulco (Season 3), Dark Matter, Hollywood Con Queen, and The Big Cigar. Trying (Season 4) will be out on 5/22. Now, it may be that most or none of this is to your taste. If Apple doesn't release things you like, definitely cancel.

It's very easy to find the original content if you go to the Apple TV app.

No.

That is not Apple Original content.

I don’t understand why so many people don’t have the mental capacity to understand something so simple.

AppleTV plus is a streaming service just like Netflix, Hulu, Disney, Peacock.

When you subscribe to AppleTV plus, you get access to only AppleTV plus content.

You don’t get access to everything ever released.

This is complete BS. It is not OK to charge a lot of money for a subscription and then to charge huge sums in addition to that for your content. I know you are trying to justify this but it does not wash.

Your Apple TV subscription only includes original Apple content. That's it. Nothing else. If you want content that comes from some other outlet, you need to buy it. It's just like if you subscribe to the New York Times, you don't get the books from the New York Times Bestseller list for free.

The "Napoleon" movie is part of the "Apple TV +" subscription content. The movies that require you to rent or buy are not part of the subscription.

The subscription is only for "Apple TV +" content except when Apple offers subscribers limited-time to watch movies that are normally not part of the subscription. Such as the 50 limited-time to watch movies that are available now for March & April 2024

It has nothing to do with how old content is. It's entirely a matter of who owns the rights. Apple owns the rights to its original content and makes it part of the subscription.
