No accents when holding down letter.
I am running Monterey and
no longer get accents when I hold down a letter key. Have rebooted twice and reset keyboard preferences to no avail.
iMac (2017 – 2020)

One option that worked a long time ago was to add another latin language to the input sources. Once it starts working again, you can remove the input source.
ABC and ABC Extended might work, also.

See if this helps
MacOS Accent Menu Has Disappeared - Apple Community
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Input Sources -> Show Input menu in menubar.
In the menubar item Show Keyboard viewer is an interactive keyboard viewer that helps you see what happens when you select the modifier keys. Any modifer key that is outlined you can hit the shortcut and add the inflection to the letter you choose after hitting the shortcut.
Barney-15E's suggestion worked for me. Thanks Barney.
