iOS 16.4.1(a) and Homekit - Philips hue not responding

Hello everyone,

I am currently having an issue with iOS 16.4.1(a) and Homekit update.

Indeed, all of my Philipps Hue lights appear as "unresponsive".

Of course Siri is also affected.

The workarounds I have found is to use Alexa or the Philipps Hue app.

  • Do you encounter this behavior?
  • Do you have any advice?

Hello @philipshue_devsupport

Here action taken:

  • Upgrading to the latest iOs version. (16.5)
  • Still using the latest version of Philipps Hue App: 4.42.0 (13244)

Test 1:

  • Trying to sync with the bridge: Failed

  • Click on "I need Help" and reset my link with Homekit:

  • After a warning, the application directs me to a new connection with a voice assistant
  • I've select Homekit, app find my old configuration, I select it then
  • App asking for for the QRCode but after 1 hour without success, I've decided to quit the app

Test 2:

  • Disconnect my Apple TV 4K from the network (in case of it will be the root cause of this issue).
  • Doing the same actions above.
  • Test 2 result: Failed

Test 3:

  • Apple TV: Down
  • Restart the bridge
  • Doing the above action
  • Test 3: Failed

Solution:

  • Reset the bridge with physical button (on back)
  • Wait for 3 Blue Leds being fixed.
  • Run the Philipps App Hue
  • Restart the Application
  • The App back from initial launch
  • Forced to redo 100% of the configuration ... grrrrrrr
  • Bridge detected.
  • Lights added + Accessories

It may help to make sure that your HomeKit setup device is not set to Use private Wi-Fi addresses on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support for your own networks. Assuming that you needed to make a change to that option you may need to allow some time for the settings to update via iCloud Keychain, then reboot any HomePods to give them a new IP that is shared on your network. Avoid using guest accounts with your own devices on your network, or activating any settings on your router that block peer-to-peer communications.

I understand the frustration, and I'm very sorry for that. We do our best to tackle this issue.

@adamletko when you are saying "cleaning up" the Bridge, what section in the Hue app did you use. If you used Settings > Bridge settings > Clean up, that will not solve this issue. It will only clean programmed behaviours and resources from the Bridge.

Follow this flow to fully reset HomeKit on the Bridge. Go to Settings > Voice assistants > Siri & Apple Home. Wait for around 30 in the screen that asks you to push link. This will show the "I need help" option > tap it and choose "No" Apple Home is not connected >  then choose to "Unlink from Apple Home". Then go through the link flow again.

Brilliant, thanks, this worked to finally get my iPhone's Home app/Siri working with our Hue bridge. To get my wife's phone connected, all I had to do was open Home/Home Settings on my iPhone, remove her from the list of persons who were authorized to use our Home, then re-add her to the list. That sent an invite to her. When we opened her Home app on her iPhone, the invite was waiting in Settings. She accepted and now Siri is working to control our Hue bridge on both our phones. Phew, glad that's finally working again.

So I have had some luck thanks to the help team on Twitter.

so hue app worked but Siri and Apple home app wasn’t working.

so to be clear, I did do a hue bridge reset. I had deleted all home settings. Deleted the app and re downloaded.

i also installed a profile that deleted home settings (found via a Reddit but a Apple link - yes was worried about doing that)

after doing all that I wasn’t getting any luck.

Philips told me:

go to Apple home software.

click the button on the hue bridge

then add accessory and then click the bridge hue

enter code etc.

This worked. Previously when I went to Apple home app and add accessory it would already show the hue bridge and I would select it and would get the error message. I wasn’t hitting the button on the hue box.

to be honest. Not sure if all the other stuff I did before and 12hrs overnight helped before I tried this simple approach.

thought I would post as it may help others.

I had the same problem occur with my Hue devices around a month ago. I spent hours with Hue support troubleshooting and following their list of troubleshooting steps until they give up also. They confirmed that it is a relatively widespread issue.

I had a sense that the problem was related to Bonjour/Zeroconfig between the Hue Bridge, my Home hubs and my router. This was also indicated because I could see that my hue devices would disconnect from my network/hub frequently. This had never happened in my prior 5-6 years with Hue devices.

Another user on a Reddit thread found a solution by replacing their Xfinity router (XB6) with a new Wifi6 router. So, I replaced mine (XB7) with an old Airport Basestation I had lying around and my problems were solved immediately. I then replaced my Xfinity router with a new one (XB8) and I have had a stable connection for over 24 hours now.

The router doesn't need to be "new" it just has to handle Bonjour/zeroconfig well. The Apple Airport Basetation does an excellent job. In the Reddit threads I was following many reported that they were using Xfinity routers and had to replace theirs for Hue to work properly again.

Hi LEFBE, we as Philips Hue are reaching out to you to better understand this issue. Sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately we have not been able to reproduce this in the lab, so your feedback is well appreciated. From the steps you took, it seems you didn't try to reset HomeKit yet on the Bridge. If you go through the pairing flow in the Hue app and it remains "searching", at some point you will get the button "I need help". This will guide you in the option to reset HomeKit on the Bridge, and we would like to know if after you can pair again.

Hi !  I've found ! it works again. I had the same problem for two weeks.

I had to delete the homekit account that was still associated with the bridge, I redid a reset of the bridge and then it was able to detect the homekit like the first time.

But I had to redo the whole installation re detect each bulb but now it works. but for information I had not changed anything, the desynchronization with HomeKit arrived with the update 4.41.0

Hi Guillaume and community,

I shared your frustration - I lost homekit+hue functionality in two locations - but a full reset solved it.

I did a full reset of the bridges. It took me 45 minutes to recreate everything in my home (17 bulbs plus switches and smart plugs). The biggest nuisance was running up and down two flights of stairs to identify the lights since the lights that were found were spread across five rooms (it took me less than 15 minutes in my appartment abroad (9 bulbs) since everything was in adjacent rooms).

@philipshue_devsupport please make this a one-time problem. A hard reset is not something any of us wants to do again.

this happened to me I had to unlink my Apple Home from the Hue app. then re-add it, for some reason my hue app is always unable to connect to apple home by pressing the button on Hue bridge. I clicked “I need help” when it failed to connect then it let me scan the code on the bottom of hue bridge instead and it works now. my family still cant use siri to control on their iphone. they’re members of my apple home and it says they can control hue devices but it says “device no response” Im still trying to fix it for them but it works on my ipad and iphone
