iOS 16.4.1(a) and Homekit - Philips hue not responding

Hello everyone,

I am currently having an issue with iOS 16.4.1(a) and Homekit update.

Indeed, all of my Philipps Hue lights appear as "unresponsive".

Of course Siri is also affected.

The workarounds I have found is to use Alexa or the Philipps Hue app.

  • Do you encounter this behavior?
  • Do you have any advice?

Hello @philipshue_devsupport

Here action taken:

  • Upgrading to the latest iOs version. (16.5)
  • Still using the latest version of Philipps Hue App: 4.42.0 (13244)

Test 1:

  • Trying to sync with the bridge: Failed

  • Click on "I need Help" and reset my link with Homekit:

  • After a warning, the application directs me to a new connection with a voice assistant
  • I've select Homekit, app find my old configuration, I select it then
  • App asking for for the QRCode but after 1 hour without success, I've decided to quit the app

Test 2:

  • Disconnect my Apple TV 4K from the network (in case of it will be the root cause of this issue).
  • Doing the same actions above.
  • Test 2 result: Failed

Test 3:

  • Apple TV: Down
  • Restart the bridge
  • Doing the above action
  • Test 3: Failed

Solution:

  • Reset the bridge with physical button (on back)
  • Wait for 3 Blue Leds being fixed.
  • Run the Philipps App Hue
  • Restart the Application
  • The App back from initial launch
  • Forced to redo 100% of the configuration ... grrrrrrr
  • Bridge detected.
  • Lights added + Accessories

It is a high priority issue for us, but unfortunate we are still not able to reproduce the issue after trying many different scenarios. We are trying to get our hands on some impacted bridge to analyse them further. The issue is indeed not widespread, which makes it harder for us to find the root cause. To help us further may I ask you to send an email to philipshuedev@signify.com with below information. If you agree we will then take a look at the back end data of your Bridge.

Thanks a lot!

resetting the bridge with needle (physically, not in the app, use reset button on the back) helps, but i had to re-add, rename, reassign to various rooms 12 devices. That is so bad. I never gonna buy another Hue product because a) they dont know how to test before release and b) are extremely slow to act, over half month and counting without crucial functionality. It is not some small startup but serious lights/accessories system that many people rely on. Shame on you Philips.

I went to the trouble this weekend of doing a factory reset of my Hue Hub, re-adding all lights/rooms, only to be right back at square one with the same issue of all my Hue lights displaying "No Response" in the Home app. I even went one further, as I had a spare, and slightly newer, Hue Hub lying around that I got from a starter pack a while back. I nuked the newly reconfigured hub with a factory reset and removed it from my Hue app. Then, I went through the process of setting up the newer hub with all the lights/rooms again and had the exact same problem - status of all Hue lights as "No Response" in the Home app.

What's odd is that I can still control all the lights through the Home app just fine, and if I click into 3-4 lights, then usually all the lights in the Home app regain their proper status and display correctly (if they are on/off and their current brightness level). In the Hue app and also in the Controller for HomeKit app (a third party app not by Apple) the lights always display the proper status of all my Hue lights. It seems to be just the Home app by Apple is the one behaving in this manner.

Just a little bit of additional info; I am running the latest iOS 16.5 on my iPhone, my HomeKit hub is an Apple TV 4K that is hardwired into a gigabit ethernet connection, which is also running the latest tvOS 16.5, and I have updated to the latest HomeKit architecture.

Latest test:

  • Upgrading Philips Hue app 4.4200 (13244)
  • Remove Apple HomeKit
  • Restart the My iPhone
  • Try to add my Philipps Hue configuration in HomeKit: Failed - unable to connect to the Hub
  • Add a new configuration in Homekit, named: test
  • Try to add my Philipps Hue configuration in the test in HomeKit: Failed - unable to connect to the Hub

As always, Alexa still continue to work as expected, Philips Hue app too.

Conclusion:

All seems indicates that the communication between my iPhone, iPad,Mac and the Philipps Hue Hub is the root cause of this behavior.

However, it's not the Hub itself because Alexa works properly.

There's a possibility: Philips upgraded the Hub firmware on May 1st. It seems that this is where problems started with HomeKit connection.

Same symptoms: Hue apps and all devices work, but no HomeKit connection. In the hue app/settings/voice companion/homekit, I'm asked to reconnect to the hub to activate HomeKit by pressing on the hub button, but Hue app doesn't detect when I press it and remains "searching", so I'm unable to reconnect.

I didn't want to reset my hub yet (dozens of devices to reconfigure...).

Tweethue has been saying "we are aware of the issue and looking for a fix" but it has now been 17 days...

Interestingly, I have 2 homes: one is still working perfectly (the "main" home in Hue app, accessible from internet) and the other one is failing. So it is not a general bug.

Hi Guillaume Fiastre, we as Philips Hue are reaching out to you to better understand this issue. Unfortunate we have not been able to reproduce this in the lab, so your feedback is well appreciated. Can you tell me if you have used the "Reset HomeKit" functionality in the Hue app. If you go through the pairing flow and it remains "searching", at some point you will get the button "I need help". This will guide you in the option to reset HomeKit on the Bridge, and we would like to know if after you can pair again.

When you say you have 2 homes, I suspect you have 2 bridges. On one bridge you don't have the issue? Can you tell me the software versions of both bridges (you can find this under Settings > Software update)?

Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused! Thanks for your help!

@robodot

We have some cases where the configuration in the factory did not go well, which can be solved by doing a factory reset. If that does not solve your issue - as you indicated you reset already multiple times - please reach out to contact customer care (preferable via social). Tell them "Can you please create a BSRT, this has been agreed with third line support."
