Page headers and numbers in a Numbers table.

How do I type page in headers and numbers in a Numbers table? This is an embarrassingly simple thing to do and I normally have no problem with it but the option seems to have gone, even though I can see both page header and footer when I print the table. Page numbers exist in the Insert option but it is always inactive.

I've solved my problem!!!

I dictate almost everything using voice control.

I turned OFF voice control and importantly rebooted the Mac.

And typing in headers and footers in Numbers is now enabled!

Turning voice control ON again - and typing into headers and footers ceased.

Thanks for your help. This is clearly an Apple bug? I wonder if they read these discussions...

Because your question was: "How do I type page in headers and numbers in a Numbers table?"

Perhaps you meant: "How do I type page numbers in headers or footers of a numbers sheet?"

A Numbers document has sheets. Sheets can hold one or more tables. Tables have cells.

A Numbers document does not have pages until you start the print process (Print Setup, command P). Then headers and footers appear.

That is because Pages has pages 😎 (and no sheets).

Two different applications.

Ian.

Thank you, Ian, and you are quite correct ... apologies, I should have asked " ... in a Numbers table page or (using the correct terminology) sheet?"

And yes, as noted above, I could see the sheet headers and footers when I pressed 'print'. But it never occurred to me to actually try typing in that space ... duh ... which I have now just done and, of course, it works. Problem solved! But I have to say, that seems a most un-Apple way of handling things, hardly "intuitive", especially for those of us used to working primarily in Pages. And before turning to bother the Community, I really did try searching the web, using as detailed/simple questioning as possible without success ... the main problem being the difference between table headers and footers versus page (or sheet) headers and footers.

Anyway, Ian, thanks again for your time ... I knew it had to be simple, and it was ... sort of!

Thanks for answering, Ian, but why would a page number be placed in a cell? I am trying to insert text into the page header and footer both of which are clearly visible in the print preview but are not when working on the document. I plan to have more than one Numbers table in the document which will run to several pages.

I simply do not understand this as it's piece of cake in a Pages document.
